I've always told my kids the best way to end racist thinking is for intermarriage. I've lived in an all black neighborhood. I had a black roommate. I was once stopped by a policeman for doing a rolling-stop, going into my white aunt's well-off neighborhood. I had a dark tan, & dark short curly hair. The policeman apologized & said "I have to ask you, what race are you?" I said that's not offensive at all.
I guess it started w/ my Jewish dad marrying my Christian mom - that's not a racial intermarriage, altho there are people, like Hitler, who believe I have Jewish blood. Oh well. My brother is married to a Korean. One son is married to a Chinese woman, so 3 of my grandchildren are from that marriage. One time while I was volunteering, a co-volunteer was telling me her son was going to Hawaii & she hoped he wouldn't fall in love w/ a Hawaiian. I asked why. She said she didn't want any slanty-eyed grandchildren. I got my phone, showed her pics of my grandchildren & said "Look at some of my beautiful grandchildren. Their mother is Chinese."
BTW, Obama is biracial; he is not black. In the old days a drop of black blood was a curse. Nowadays everyone wants to be all black, no matter what mix.
I look forward to 'check the box' choices to disappear. For instance, if my Chinese/Caucasian grandchildren marry a Black/Hispanic, what box/s do their children check off? I had this conversation w/ someone, & he said he checks off: Other. Then writes: Human
I honestly think it was the rolling-stop??? But you could be right, & if so, yes, that would be offensive. It was late, so I don't think he could clearly see me in the car, & the neighborhood didn't have much lighting. My address was an all-black neighborhood.

I know someone who moved to Alexandria, VA in 1974 & all the public schools were still segregated.
The movie ‘Remember the Titans’ was about that time period & a high school there
That’s the suburbs of DC. I was in Annapolis, MD at that time (when I experienced the above police event).
I also experienced, because I was living with a black female house mate, when my uncle found out he never spoke another word to me. A total bigot. He also hated my Jewish dad who married my Christian mom. Oh, but it was ok for my bigoted uncle to have sex with a friend of a friend of mine while he was married to my aunt.
Your uncle sounds like a lot of folks who have given humans a bad name by their behavior.
Amazing to me that Alexandria was still segregated in 74. I graduated high school in 72 in Norfolk and my high school was not only integrated but my favorite teacher was black.
It’s not just skin colour, it can be religion as well as race. People are different for a lot of different reasons and we are all entitled to live in peace and make our own decisions about who we fraternize with and love. Under the skin, we are all the same.

BTW, Melissa , thanks for bringing it everyone’s attention that religious bigotry is a reality. In fact, I believe in Canada it’s becoming more of an issue. My replies to your concerns are not politically divisive but should be addressed
I remember their story and the movie. In these times of renewed bigotry I think we need to be reminded that we are all in this together. I’m 84 years old and it tears me up inside to see us lose the enlightenment that I’ve experienced in my lifetime.🤧😎

Kinda interesting that a mere 2 years after the Supreme Court’s decision Virginia adopted “Virginia is for Lovers”.

People can be quite narrowminded.
