We'll need to remember the courage and conviction of the Selma marchers when the government comes for our voting rights between now and November.

In 1965, Congress debated the Voting Rights Act through the spring and summer. The Senate passed it 77-19. The House passed it 333-85. What was the percentage of Republicans vs Democrats in those two votes?

The final passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson) saw large bipartisan majorities in both chambers. Here’s the party breakdown for the final votes.

🏛 Senate Vote (77–19)

Final Senate Vote: 77 in favor, 19 opposed

By party:

Democrats: 46 yes, 21 no → 67 total voting

Republicans: 30 yes, 2 no → 32 total voting

Percentage breakdown

Democrats

✔ Yes: 68.7%

✖ No: 31.3%

Republicans

✔ Yes: 93.8%

✖ No: 6.2%

Overall composition of the Senate vote

Democrats: 67.7% of those voting

Republicans: 32.3% of those voting

🏛 House Vote (333–85)

Final House Vote: 333 in favor, 85 opposed

By party:

Democrats: 221 yes, 61 no → 282 total voting

Republicans: 112 yes, 24 no → 136 total voting

Percentage breakdown

Democrats

✔ Yes: 78.4%

✖ No: 21.6%

Republicans

✔ Yes: 82.4%

✖ No: 17.6%

Overall composition of the House vote

Democrats: 67.5% of those voting

Republicans: 32.5% of those voting

Summary

The Act passed with strong bipartisan support.

In the Senate, a higher percentage of Republicans voted in favor (93.8%) than Democrats (68.7%).

In the House, support was strong in both parties (82.4% of Republicans, 78.4% of Democrats).

Democrats made up about two-thirds of the members voting in both chambers.

If you'd like, I can also break this down by region (Southern vs non-Southern members), which shows a very different pattern.
