Like others, I was unaware of the specific details of Mr. Douglass’s escape. I was either distracted in class or they were not covered. Hmm…perhaps both???

It is interesting how so many people trash Jimmy Carter yet he was one of our most intelligent presidents.

As president, Carter pardoned all Vietnam draft evaders and negotiated major foreign policy agreements, including the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, and he established diplomatic relations with China. He created a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. He signed bills that created the Departments of Energy and Education.

That is an impressive list of accomplishments in just four years, washed away in part by “trickle down economics,” the beginning of where we are today.

Thanks for another informative newsletter!

President Carter was a better man than we deserved and did far more for us than was known by most at the time. It was truly a sad day when Began and Sadat were assassinated. We should have gotten the hint then that there would be no room for peace in the Middle East. Look where we are today especially after the stupid bombing stunt we just pulled.

Thank you, Bill.

"I lived more in one day than in a year of my slave life." What a thing to be able to say! As someone who lives in Talbot County, where Douglass was held as an enslaved person, the story and all it's many details never ceases to amaze me.

If you're not already aware of this project, it's worth a minute of exploration. The book is beautiful and sobering, the film incredibly well done. Last I heard, they were still looking for a "permanent home" for it, as in an establishment/institution that could own and share it into the future.

We can’t know if history would look a lot different or not. There is just no way to know. But I do agree that must have been quite the stressful and scary trip and Douglas made some astounding accomplishments for someone who began as a slave. Sometimes we forget how challenging any travel was in hose times. We take planes and cars and subways for granted.

“Thursday, September 3 : "All acts of hostility against the Anglo-American force by Italian forces must cease everywhere." — Marshal Pietro Badoglio, announcing on Italian radio the armistice Italy had secretly signed with the Allies on this day in 1943. British and Canadian troops landed on the Italian mainland the same day; the announcement was held for five days until Allied forces were in position.”

That was then. Can anyone see that happening today? We’ve pissed off Canada and Italy and every other friend we used to have in the world.

By the way Bill, as a side note, the G-20 is meeting in my little mountain hometown of Asheville, NC. At the Grove Park Inn.
