A 25% tariff on our neighbors? Prices will go up or purchasing will go down. Since we are a consumer-driven economy get ready for a return to inflationary times, a recession or both. It’s all about supply and demand.
- Mexico is our largest producer of agricultural products.
- deporting immigrants that do the dirty work in our own agricultural system will impact our prices
- according to Forbes: One of the most immediate effects of tariffs is higher prices of goods and services, particularly for items that rely on imports. When a government imposes tariffs on foreign goods, the added cost often gets passed down to consumers.
Well, it's not like we care about anyone else but ourselves here, right? Despite many people (some of whom are economists) saying that tariffs will be bad for the country, Trump insists this is the way to make the country money for his programs. He doesn't want to get into the details of what tariffs will do in real life. That would be against his principles of governing by feeling and people whispering in his ear.
Many of us have been saying as much but the inaccurate braying from a certain person got those who “do their own research” thinking otherwise. To top it off, the new treasury choice, Scott Bessent, has said the there will be no inflation because, “Tariffs can’t be inflationary because if the price of one thing goes up, unless you give people more money, then they have less money to spend on the other thing, so there is no inflation”. See how that works? Just make increased prices and inflation two different things. The Ministry of Information has spoken and you shall believe it!
As for Drunksgiving, we might just decide to extend it into an all day, every day affair. Enjoy the holidays everyone.
The tariffs are being used as a deterrent. We know that Mexico is allowing people to cross our border (with the help of our current administration) unvetted and at will. They are bringing criminal gangs and, just as bad - or worse- fentanyl. There were 150,928 fentanyl related deaths between 2022 and 2023. As the world has finally been given the opportunity to witness since the election, minor children are being trafficked across the border without parental supervision. God only knows what has happened to the 320,000 kids that this administration has lost somewhere in America. The tariffs are being used as a 'screw you' deterrent. Keep sending the drugs and gangs and we are going to ruin your economy. The new President of Mexico just said if we impose tariffs on them, they will impose tariffs on us. We all know that Mexico needs our economy, so that will not happen. At some point our new administration and Mexico will come to an agreement that stops the flow of illegal immigrants and avoids tariffs.
I don't understand this:
"deporting immigrants that do the dirty work in our own agricultural system will impact our prices"
So, instead of giving jobs to the people who come to the country legally, wait in line, do the paperwork and sacrifice, like our immigrant parents did, you are willing to give it all away to the people who cut the line, got free housing, free healthcare, free cell phones and free debit cards?
No offense, but that is not where I want my tax $ going. They are coming here illegally, they do not deserve to be here, and definitely do not deserve life on a silver platter. LEGAL migrants deserve first dibs at jobs and housing. And before any goes on a rant about them being asylum seekers, I'm calling BS. Maybe a percentage of them are truly here for that reason. The rest saw an open border, free stuff and a chance to take what they want, when they want and how they want. This isn't a human interest story, its a complete ransacking of our resources, paid for by the American people.
Fentanyl is a terrible thing. But close to 90% is seized at official border crossings, and more than half is attempted smuggling by US citizens according to a report.
Also what's up with Canada? The number of illegal crossings from Canada is up but it's tiny compared to Mexico!
Lisa I heard today that the Mexican president is going to take measures to halt the caravan. So perhaps Trump’s tariffs are going to bring about the results he wants. It’s not punishment to the US population. It’s for our benefit.
Walmart CFO John David Rainey told CNBC that new tariffs could force the retailer to raise prices.
Lowe’s CEO Marvin Ellison said the home improvement retailer is concerned about the risk of higher costs and is already having conversations with suppliers about tariffs.
The companies joined other brands and retail trade groups in warning that the tax on imports proposed by President-elect Donald Trump could fuel inflation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened retaliatory tariffs on US goods yesterday, in response to President-elect Donald Trump's pledged 25% tariffs if Mexico fails to halt the flow of drugs and migrants into the US.
Not only is Drunk Wednesday a bad name for the day preceding Thanksgiving, but it also highlights what I've been reading about Americans drinking too much and more people dying as a result of consuming so much alcohol.
We need to find a way for people to socialize that doesn't involve drinking. Can someone do that? I guess board games are too old fashioned, but how about bowling? I'm lousy at it but I enjoy it anyway.
When I go home, I am amazed by how many people I went to school with back in the 1970's still live in the same town. I could not get out of there fast enough, and even now when I go back, nothing has changed. I am also amazed by how many of my classmates are married to other class mates, but that is another discussion.
We had our turkey day last month in Canada. Hope the US one is a happy day. And hope that someone can educate Trump on basic economics, although I doubt he would listen. All tariffs do is push up the prices and four years after the pandemic, they are still too high.
I hope those classmates who are married to their classmates are happy 😃 & enjoy a nonjudgmental lifestyle 👍
I heard today that Trudeau held an emergency meeting with the Canadian cabinet and they’re going to work much harder on controlling their border with the US.
I know some of them are, they dated back in high school and have been together ever since. I think that is wonderful that is this huge world, you can find your soulmate like that. Wasn't the life that I wanted, but it works for them.
I think the Canada/US border is pretty tough to control, there is a lot of open prairie. But I think we can do better at screening who comes in.
Wow! That was a lot to go through just so I can leave a comment!
Anyway, I just wanted to say that you neglected to mention in your list Giving Tuesday. Unless that’s just a Pittsburgh thing? When you donate/give to your favorite charities. Just sayin’ …

Indeed. Trump doesn’t care about drugs or economics, only if what he does makes him feel powerful or makes money.
Lisa I heard today that the Mexican president is going to take measures to halt the caravan. So perhaps Trump’s tariffs are going to bring about the results he wants. It’s not punishment to the US population. It’s for our benefit.
So it’s working already
Will never ever convince the Trump haters; that’s ok
But is it working? Facts matter.

There are better ways.
But is it?
Tit-for-Tat Tariffs
