---> I don't watch any tv broadcasts; only watch movies. I try to avoid any political discussions. As y'all have seen here, it's either an echo chamber, or head-butting, lots of pointing-of-fingers, or non-sensical rhetoric, no one listening, not about to change anyone's pov, so why try.
Claire Shipman, the acting president of Columbia, issued an apology in a private email to several campus leaders for leaked messages where she suggested that a Jewish trustee should be removed from the university’s board over her pro-Israel advocacy. In text exchanges, Shipman referred to a Jewish member of the Board of Trustees as "A fox in the henhouse... I am tired of her" and wanted her removal and replacement with an “Arab” person over the board member’s criticisms of antisemitism.
Revealed in testimony at the House Committee on Education and Workforce hearings.
“… instead of spending your efforts trying to stamp out what you find offensive, you should work on being less offended in the first place.”
“ Scholars have noted that people with a “proclivity to be offended” tend to be poor performers at work and prone to all kinds of counterproductive behavior. Such prickly people are very likely to be narcissists, because their offense-taking is driven by an overweening sense of entitlement and an unwillingness to overlook any sleight; they may even feign being offended—shocked, even—to gain advantage.”
Agree with the first article. If something online offends you, then just move on. You don’t HAVE to respond to every single item in your feed. People are so quick to be offended these days, the world could use more kindness in thought and in deed.
It’s easy to say Find the thing you love, but it’s a lot more difficult to actually find it. I am headed t o my retirement years and am still looking for what I “love”. I ended up in a role of admin support because I knew it was something where I could always find a job. And I was successful in that. Did I love it? Once in a while. I was lucky to have three managers over my 40 years that used my skills and abilities. But I had many more who had no clue. I do have some hobbies that I enjoy but can’t say I love them. I envy those who know what they want from an early age.
I’m retired, and have been for several years. As I’ve commented in many many many posts, I have been a volunteer for my entire adult life in my volunteer activities. Those I work with, and those I serve, we have no idea the political issues of any. I love love, love That aspect of my volunteer services.
I’m editing to say there are so many areas of volunteer services that can appeal to many many people. So just research and find something that might appeal to you. If you like animals that can be an area. If you like children many many many areas in that aspect. Food services. Meals on wheels. Alzheimer’s. Caring services. Foster services. Environmental services. Etc. etc. etc. it does not matter your interest. There are volunteer areas that can use your time and love.
I also do a lot of crafting. I used to do more, but have given some of that up lately like knitting. Now I do more water coloring and use my water coloring skills, not that they are proficient, but I make cards for people plus I teach my grandkids.
My husband and I try to go to bed each night with thoughts of gratitude, and wake up in the morning with thoughts of gratitude.
That bill passed in the House. If it hasn’t already been signed it soon will be and I’m not confident that people are going to be finding that many jobs out there that they can be happy with. I really hope I’m wrong here but technically, we are in a recession if the two quarters of no growth are what determines a recession. Frankly, it’s just difficult to be optimistic today Bill. Steve Jobs was in the right timeline.
What a great concept. We should all find “the thing we love”. Except how? Only the privileged can do that.I came into adulthood under Reaganomics, when nothing was trickling down. Any ideas I had of writing the great American novel were quickly destroyed by the need to pay rent and eat. How many people now, after the Big Beautiful bill has passed effectively destroying all access and support for students and minorities, will be able to follow their dreams? Will those service level minimum wage jobs give them the time and Opportunity to better themselves? Not often. We have a son who wants to do online entertainment, streaming content, that sort of thing. His college coursework (for which we, not loans, paid) was all targeted toward this. He is no closer to his goals now than he was at the beginning of the pandemic, when he was graduated. And he wants badly to find someone to blame. I wish him luck. Because the folx he thinks are the culprits are suffering right alongside him. The American Dream only exists for those who have the capital to pursue it.
still love this which I posted several days ago when it was first posted at the Atlantic:

Interesting lines from the article you shared:

I posted that specifically for you - narcissistic, get prickly at everything that isn’t your way of thinking
Did you take the time to read and digest your words? I simply ask questions. Are you offended by them?

Always great to hear your Jobs thoughts, and reminders.
Happy 4th Bill and everyone. Hopefully we can celebrate as one nation and remember the foundations this great country were built on.
