Today’s 7 Other Things paints the beginnings of a frightening future.
Moving an entire portion of the military because of personal, petty grievances? I thought we were saving money? Or is the real plan to move all military to red states to consolidate forces?
Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.
4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
Best Buy is already doing something similar with LoveSac. LoveSac has customizable couches with speaker systems built in. They had a LoveSac employee at Best Buy to pitch the system to us. Great idea for Best Buy to simplify and enhance customers’ experiences.
we don't buy much at all, but back in the day when I began learning about IKEA (I now live near one), the cost of shipping was OUTRAGEOUS!!! So the pairing up sounds like it might be good.
A side note, I recently purchased a set of 6 books written by Stephen Hawking & daughter, 'Secret Key to the Universe' - 2 sets from Amazon for 2 sets of grandkids, but Amazon ran out, so I learned that Walmart sells & ships used items & I found the 3rd needed set to send to my other granddaughter.
ok, going back to last issue of Big Optimism, which I still don't understand why there isn't a 'comment' section... Piggly Wiggly - that was the supermarket we always used when I was a kid. They gave green stamps, too. And the concept - imagine that - thinking that grown-ups want to act like grown-ups, making up their own minds. Hmmmm, makes me think of the Dems, thinking they always know what's best, they don't want adults making decisions... altho, eta, the R's going to the other extreme & saying a woman can't make the decision about her own body.
otherwise, I do love that your list from Big Opt generally doesn't include today's politics. From that list, my fav, of course, is:
Friday September 5: “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” — Mother Teresa, remembered on this day, the anniversary of her death in 1997. The United Nations later designated September 5 as the International Day of Charity in her honor, linking her words with a global call to compassion. And to all, faith without action is little, or no, faith. Even to those without faith you can act with kindness & give by action, not words of hate. Volunteer, do something, out of kindness, compassion, alongside others who might not be like you, probably aren't like you, and may neither of you care.
Hi! The reason I removed comments on Big Optimism is that it runs on a different system, ConvertKit (now Kit).
Unfortunately ConverKit does not have a native comments section. So I had to run an entirely different system. That caused a lot of issues. It had very low quality spam control for one and required constant attention.
I suppose that begs the question why not move it over here. But, I've got a few things I'm experimenting with behind the scenes that can't be replaced on Substack. More to come soon! Thanks!
Well, so-called adults made their own decisions back in November and look at where we are now. Republicans today just keep proving over and over that they are irresponsible and completely selfish know-nothings. Know nothing of diseases, know nothing about women(thanks for admitting that at least), know nothing of history, know nothing about seeing any further than their noses; this list is endless. So please, tell us again how wonderful republican adults are so great at making decisions especially after doing “their own research”.
And the Dems cover up for Biden, calling ALL the Republicans dumb before the election, using identity labels LOST the election… Dems said everyone had to buy electric cars, had to get rid of gas ovens, couldn’t leave a footprint while they were hypocrites flying back & forth every weekend, plus the hypocritical racist DEI & WOKE … I am not a fan of Trump, wish Congress would get a backbone but still love the mantra I’ve used for many many years:
THERE’s NOTHING WORSE THAN A CONSERVATIVE BIGOT… UNLESS IT’S A LIBERAL HYPOCRITE
Trump will be gone by 2028, if not sooner. Dems aren’t showing anything better than they had before because they are still soooo fixated on Trump hate they can’t think of getting over that hill
The last time I was in an IKEA store, I started having an anxiety attack- the store was massive filled with crap that people don’t need. And once you get in, it’s very hard to get out. I do have a work table from IKEA, but will probably never darken their doorstep again. Sad statement on over consumerism.
If I were an American - and I give thanks every day I am not - I would be gravely worried about Trump’s plans. Based on other things going on in the world, I think he is going to lose the US standing in the world, and the dollar will no longer be the standard. Would be diversifying my stock portfolio! (I already have)
