I understand trump was expecting a Gaza deal to earn him a prize even though any negotiating was done by others based on item 1 of 7 Other Things. Maria earned it from HER efforts for democracy. Can you see the irony?
Live Updates: María Corina Machado of Venezuela Is Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised “her tireless work promoting democratic rights.” Ms. Machado, who built one of Venezuela’s most important political movements, has been in hiding since last year.
I now remember Operation Babylift - had forgotten it, & just knew at the time what little was presented in the news, not that anything at that time was deliberately omitted. Loved reading today's link. Thanks!
I also remember the Running Nun, & had forgotten. I'm not at all comparing... when I was getting close to my 50th bday, I was at a party, talking to a female who had been in the service. She was able to do 100 push-ups. A guy came up, heard that, said "women's style", she said, "no, men's". He wouldn't believe it. So I took that as a challenge. Started doing them; could do about 3 starting out😁; hit a wall at around 20. Got back in touch w/ that woman, she advised me what to do. So my goal was get to 50 on my 50th. Mission accomplished. After that, every bday I did the # of push-ups for my bday +1. Sometimes more, but who's counting. Then at age 72 I broke my wrist doing something else, so since then, quit... oh well...
I enjoyed, I guess enjoyed, reading the dress rehearsal... my mom was diagnosed when I was in 10th grade; had 5 surgeries, died early in my senior yr. So my high school yrs were kind-of a blur I guess you'd say. Never came close to the 'touching' story in the link, altho, again, 'touching' might not be quite the word to use...
so sad kids can't REALLY go trick or treating! Soooooo many good times when I was a kid!
Totally enjoyed all the stories today, Bill! Especially enjoyed reading about the Vietnamese adoptions since one of my nieces came from Viet Nam as a 12 year old (but our family was told she was 6 and the name given was not her real name). Loan is in her early 60's now and would love to reconnect with her 4 siblings but has no idea how to find them but has begun the search.
The nun's story is uplifting and gives hope for what is possible.
The mother daughter story is heart breaking while providing a wonderful memory for her daughter and for us.
I know a woman who was 40 yo single (husband was killed in an accident resulting in her receiving a lot of insurance $$). She adopted 2 Russian boys who were in Russian orphanages, half-brothers. One was just under a yr, the other was between 3 & 4. When they first came over, she found them going to her kitchen at night & grabbing all the food they could & hiding it in their room. She couldn't take them to the grocery or restaurants, they'd grab whatever they could. The first time, well every time, I went to visit, they'd rush to me & crawl all over me, starved for attention. She worked w/ them diligently. It was almost impossible but she legally got the eldest's age changed back a yr because he was developmentally delayed. He was very smart, but delayed. She ended up adopting 2 more Russian children a few yr's later, younger sisters.
Do your homework Darrell - a woman 40+ who wanted to adopt healthy infants in the US during the time didn’t have a chance. Russia was, shall we say, over run, with adoptable children under the age of around 3. Those 4 children THRIVED!!!! They are now productive happy US adult citizens. How dare you.
A few years later my neighbors adopted a Russian child thru their church (oh I know you don’t believe). The mother herself had been adopted & was so grateful she knew she would adopt. Those parents had two children then adopted that Russian boy then an Asian girl. Darrell, are you prejudiced saying Americans shouldn’t adopt from other countries?
You are so full of hate towards me you take this topic about adoption & turn it into hatred. You need to examine your motives for responding to me
You need to own up to your hatred and not delete comments like below, challenging me with “have you ever adopted anyone?” That’s the essence of that comment that precipitated my response that I actually have adopted a child. It shows it was deleted. SMG…
Of course, all the famous people who have adopted children from foreign countries are deserving Darrell's contempt... Madonna, Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie, Erwan McGregor, Thomas Rhett & Lauren Akins, Senator John McCain, Elizabeth Taylor, Meg Ryan --- there are plenty more. Oh the shame - those selfish celebrities, ignoring deserving children here...
Loved the stories of the nuns. I'm also thrilled that Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He's caused more International and US conflict than any president in history. Horah for the ones who didn't choose her and the lady who won.
Recently, in a Cincinnati suburb, a high school student used AI to make it appear that two homeless men had entered his home while he was alone. His mother saw the video from work and frantically called 911. Police responded to find the ruse. The teen told police he did it as a joke. The teenager has been charged in the case. This stuff is getting out of hand.
Lots of good stories today, thanks for sharing. Halloween has sure changed since I was a kid and we used to get popcorn balls and tip over outhouses. My dad always made the kids tell a joke or sing a song to get treats. Funny enough, the kids all loved coming to our house. Now our town has Treat Street, all the merchants have candy in front of their businesses and the kids wander up and down a closed Main Street.
All really good stories today Bill but the Halloween story got me thinking about my childhood halloweens. My elementary school had a big Halloween party where everyone dressed up and the entire staff made it fun for kids and parents. Then, my cousin’s folks had $$$ and plenty of yard space so they put on a big Halloween party for us while the adults either participated in the scary things or they sat around and had cocktails. Tricks and treats for everyone. Then all of the kids would hit the neighborhood for the goodies. I think things changed for children these last thirty or so years because really malevolent people started spiking candy with all sorts of dangerous things.

A well-deserved award too I might add. So ironic. So sweet.

Sad that deserving children here missed an opportunity for a good family. Oh, well.
You weren’t really asking a question, just making a snarky, provocative, and misinformed jab.
As it happens, our 18 year adopted daughter just graduated from high school this year. She spent 4 years in AFROTC where she excelled.
It’s impressive how you always know everything… except how you actually come across.

You know the sound a cricket makes?
If you delete a comment after someone has responded you still own that comment. Shame doesn’t exonerate your actions.

You deleted a mean, hateful comment directed at me after I responded, yet you continue to deflect and obfuscate by making ME the bad guy.
What do you always say that is a sign of?
Your ego wrote a check that reality couldn’t cash.
