Sometimes I like to get out of the way and just let people tell their own stories.

As one such example, I got sucked into a long series of short, first-person accounts written by Gen Z Ukrainians that ran on New York magazine’s website.

I’ve included some excerpts below—about as far as I think “fair use” under copyright law can carry me—but I recommend checking the whole thing.

I believe these were mostly or all originally written in Ukrainian and translated, but they carry a real immediacy—recognizable emotions, and unexpected connections like watching the same shows on Netflix or using the same calendar apps.

But it’s also horrifying and fascinating to see how quickly the new normal becomes normal. Anyway, let me follow my own advice and just get out of the way.

I’ve organized these by date and the person speaking. Ages were available for some but not all, but if you click through and look at the photos, you’ll see they're almost all 20-somethings.
