May the force be with you

But don't get in the way

These machines are both annoying and a driver distraction cause of accidents in my opinion

I side with the people engaging in voluntary commerce. Obviously as this becomes more common, which I hope is soon, there will need to be reasonable rules of the road. But it is one thing to make people move aside for robots and another entirely to intentionally block them.

We are talking about a public sidewalk, right? Why doesn’t the robot move aside for the person? Can I be arrested for not moving for a Door Dash delivery person? Does the company running the robot system have more rights than the human being? And to be clear, are you saying you are in favor of more people losing their jobs to robots?

That was what I was referring to as the need for rules of the road. My objection was against intentional obstruction on her part.

Yes, I support technology and the freedom of customers and employers to choose automation over the supposed rights of an employee, existing or theoretical, to a job. The entire modern world was built on a foundation of technology and energy substituting for, or leveraging, human labor.

I agree. Altho don't ask me to tip a robot. I don't like the tip jars in fast food places, drive-thrus, etc., but I've heard, not personally experienced, of robots w/ "tips" on the payment screens. That, to me, is an ugh. Unless they accept the tip of "Have a nice day & exchange smiles" 🙂😉

Thanks for clarifying your position. I support the woman’s right to peacefully protest her position as long as she is doing so within the existing laws. I also believe companies have too much power over humans.

This doesn't seem like a binary choice. As described in the newsletter I would say that the woman was actively engaging as an obstruction. She went out of her own way to be in the way of what someone else is paying for. That is not the same as robots running people over, pushing people aside. Apparently the robot waited - maybe honked or flashed lights, but waited without harming her.

Take into account that the loss of delivery jobs creates new job opportunities. Someone engineered and designed that robot. Someone gets paid to maintain that robot (hardware). Someone will likely get paid to write/run software updates on that robot. Politicians and media folk get to debate and engender anger at the robots.

John Henry was replace by the steam engine - anyone here wish they could be digging holes in mountains with a pick and shovel?

I agree w/ all your points

Nothing is a binary choice. Life is lived in all the gray areas.

As someone with an ADA disability I have to agree with this woman. A delivery vehicle shouldn’t take priority over a pedestrian in a pedestrian space. I have held my spot on the sidewalk for multiple scooters. Move them in to the bike lane

You said it better than me! Sidewalks are for feet (and wheelchairs and strollers).

And did you hear the new Life magazine is going to cost $45 an issue?

dj l's avatar

didn't hear that - hmmmm, I'll predict not many folks will purchase. At the thrift shop where I volunteer, some old copies come in as donations. Those are collector's items & we'll price them around $12. max. One time a woman bought one 'cause she was going to cut it up to make a mixed-media collage out of it. 🤣

I couldn't get into the article through the link provided, but I heard the price listed on my morning radio news. I thought well, rich people might spend that but when I heard the price, I gasped :>) Guess you'll have to raise your price for these new issues! Too funny about the collage!

Change is hard, however, it’s inevitable. Check your age when you complain. I check in with my 20 something nephews to ask how they feel. It helps me make more informed and well rounded opinions.
