In retirement we volunteer weekly at our local national wildlife refuge. The rangers in the state refuges here work chronically understaffed, and absent the many great volunteers I've met, visitor experience and routine trail maintenance would quickly begin to degrade. The work ethic, dedication and depth of knowledge of the rangers as they motivate and organize us and everything else in the refuges are exemplary. No detail escapes their oversight.
In my former career managing hundreds of people, I would have been fortunate to hire any of our rangers. My granddaughters are in awe of our local ranger. She inspires in them a love for beautiful wild places and helps us learn the complexity and mystery of interconnected nature. We are lucky to know her.
It is such a travesty that we have pulled the rug out from under Ukraine. Military intelligence, satellite communications and equipment support all pulled in the span of a day with zero notice. It’s like hunters tossing corn out for deer, and then, bam!
And then to override the Graham sanctions on Russia for pennies on the gallon. SMH
Living in the outskirts of Albany New York I get to witness the unending brigade of state workers and watch as their unions use every four year cycle of the governor's election to renegotiate retirement plan obligations to be less rigorous , more generous and including vast amounts of overtime in exchange for union support of a candidate. Yes, there are many devoted hard working state employees but the system is laden with fat and non productive employees strewn throughout and the legislators and governor spend taxpayer money to secure voting endorsements freely, because it's other people's money.
Point 3 took me the longest to accept too. I work in public procurement for the Italian Navy, and process has turned out to be what makes a result legitimate when you don’t get to choose who’s asking. The rules matter most when you’d rather make an exception.
