well, I found today's UNDERSTANDABLY in my junk file!! I went there looking for something else - so glad I did! I guess it's because you had "scam" in your subject line!

Love the 'What Dan Read' link. Difficult to see/read his notations, but I'll give it a try. I wonder how many I'll add to my list of 'want to read'...

And I'll be interested to watch 'Zero Day Attack' - I hope it'll be available.

so sad about the crowded animal shelters. I remember that happened after COVID lockdown opened up.

I agree about the animal shelters but I happen to think that the little dog I rescued was probably one of those turned over after covid as well. Someone had owned her long enough to train her very well and then something happened so that she ended up in a no-kill rescue. Someone adopted her and kept her for a while but then turned her in to the animal shelter in my county. I just happened to go online and see that she was being held for the no-kill to pick her up. They had chipped her so would get to adopt her out again. I called them and pestered them to death until they understood I was serious so they let me know I could pick her up in a couple of days. When I got there, she was so shut down she wouldn’t even walk with me so I picked her up, carried her around and just talked to her. She has been with me ever since and is lying next to me in our chair as I write this. Her name is PNut and she shares my heart.

It’s odd and a testament to what’s important to people now that this is the kind of scams going around. Another example: employment scams. This goes beyond ghost jobs and the cesspool of job listings that LinkedIn and Indeed have become. I have been almost scammed twice in the past three months, one getting dangerously closer than the other one. I consider myself fairly educated and able to spot scams, having grown up with “Nigerian prince” cautionary tales, but AI has enabled these bad actors to become more and more sophisticated, with the red flags and tells becoming increasingly difficult to spot (slightly different fonts on one document, questionable grammar that gives one pause, remote work offers that seems too good to be true). What started as text messages offering remote opportunities that pay $1,000 a week “when you click on this link to get started” has evolved into a suspicious head of HR offering me a job I didn’t apply for and attaching my own resume to the message.

I know this is already being written about and there have been a few LinkedIn posts by influencers over there, but I consider this as spreading the word about these scams too in case someone out there thinks they’re getting the employment lifeline they so desperately need. Don’t get got! If you’re ever unsure, google the name of the person emailing you and ‘scam.’ Saved my neck.

Same with me. Fantastic offers referring to my outstanding resumé although I’ve never had a resumé out anywhere because I’ve been retired from any and everything for 25 years and I was an x-ray technologist at my local VA so no executive experience, yada, yada, yada.

I've been getting similar approaches - in some cases from supposed consulting "firms" who seek to collaborate - and though they were able to connect through the LinkedIn message, they asked for my WhatsApp contact info to move ahead. I'm not sure quite how they would leverage that channel, because I view that request as the clear sign that there is something not quite right ... Seems like a similar approach.

Scams are a multi billion dollar problem. My best advice is to never click on links in text messages or emails, and ALWAYS verify through another channel. Meta/Facebook is a notorious cesspool of scammers. I tell people to believe nothing on Facebook. It’s sad, but that’s the way it is now.

As for security on an account, ALWAYS use 2 factor authentication or passkeys on apps that provide it. In addition, ALWAYS use a different strong password for every account. If you don’t want to remember passwords, use a password manager.

I read more than 100 books a year but only start tracking them a few years ago. I doubt my kids I’ll post them online when I go. Having access to a public library is a truly wonderful thing. This year, I,will focussing more on on non-fiction reads.

While AI has its uses. I don’t trust it and seldomly use it. Science is quickly losing control of the narrative. Things will likely get a lot worse before they get better.

I feel for the people on Palestine. They are paying a heavy price for sheltering terrorists.

Gaza had a population of around 2.1 million people before the Israeli government decided to overreact to the attack by Hamas; an attack that the government had been warned about by its own security team. Out of that 2 million people, there were thought to be between 20,000-40,000 Hamas fighters. I would hazard a guess that most people wouldn’t know a member of Hamas if they passed one in the street. It would be like the city of Houston, TX., that has about the same population, that also had about 30,000 members of the KKK living among them. Would Louisiana go to war against Houston for harboring terrorists? Bad analogy but you get the idea. Trying to run down 1.5% of your beleaguered population would be a challenge.
