I believe one of the failings of education system is the movement away from teaching critical thinking skills, something essential in today’s world of (anti) social media, algorithms, and 24/7 news.
Marketing teaches us that a message needs to be heard at least five to seven times. When someone watches ANY cable news or subscribes to any other news source they have to be wary. Critical thinking skills are fundamental.
I’m disappointed that you of all people would share an article that explicitly says “ I did all my research with ChatGPT; I didn't read or double-check all the original sources”
Sorry I disappointed you. I just picked the first one I googled. There are thousands that say the same thing. The principle is something I know and understand after 40 years in the business world and is here in my house somewhere in a 50 year-old marketing textbook I’m too lazy to find.
“In a sense, knowledge shrinks as wisdom grows, for details are swallowed up in principles. The details for knowledge which are important will be picked up ad hoc in each avocation of life, but the habit of the active utilization of well understood principles is the final possession of wisdom”
So ... why did Canadians immediatelly not believe Trump when he threatened to make Canada the 51st state, outlining all the benefits to be achieved, and with constant repetition. Why did we not immediatelly cave when Trump has battered our economy non-stop with tarrifs and uncertainty and shifting positions all the while claiming we would benefit from US control. Why did the Ukraine president suffer embarrassment and public humiliation while trying to work towards a win-win. Time for the studies you quoted to move into a new line of research that explores how and why people rationally choose to resist the irresistable offers that trigger irrational decisions.
I think there are a LOT more critical thinkers in Canada and Ukraine. I just WISH we had more here, but a lot of them are being driven out based upon what I've read about scientists leaving.
True. And in Canadas recent budget a special fund was created to attract and bring US academics and researchers to this country to fund their work here. Our win ... your loss.
The brain drain is real. Honestly though, nothing about Bill’s newsletter is surprising anymore. We’ve watched the erosion of truth happening for over 30-40 yrs. It got so blatant during the GW Bush years that my once rock-ribbed republican husband finally left the “Lying Party”.
People have always been gullible, looking for the way to make easy money. There is a well-known Canadian home renovation guy shelling for a real estate fund on Facebook, says it gives a 20% return on investment. Sounds too good to be true, and the fix is in the details. How many people will invest in this “sure thing” only to find out either they can’t get their money out, or the returns aren’t there because the market has changed. I believe in things I can touch and see or taste, like the free bites of scones outside a local bakery (and they are GOOD!). And if somethings sounds too good to be true, I have my group of knowledgeable people who can tell me if it’s real or suss.
And good on you for using modern technology. Don’t care if AI wrote it or not, was it any less accurate?. Sometimes haters just got to hate.
Outstanding essay today, Bill.
