Sometimes, you need to say “no” or “not now” to a good person or thing, because you need the time/energy/resources to say “yes” to the best person or thing that aligns with your values. When you say “yes” to too many, you are drained and likely not performing at your best.
That is a great question. I was born into a lower middle class family in 1950 in Philadelphia. The chances of hitting it big were very limited. But we had all my mother’s family within 2 blocks of our house and I had a lot of cousins that I was close with. Having given you some back ground I would say that keep working hard and dont get discouraged. I am now 75 living in Florida and New York and grand cayman, not bad for a kid who’s dad was a mailman. You can hit it big but only if you start small and build and build and build
Find what you love to do, dedicate yourself to it, small steps and focus. Let the power of compounding work for you in life. The rest (as your readers and you point out) will fall into place.
There are a lot of things that I would say to the younger me. But in short, I will tell myself "It is easy but that's not easy, it is difficult but not that difficult". And I did so 22 years ago.
I would tell myself that I am as important as anyone else and the best way I can help others is to take care of and help myself first.
Start a Roth IRA and fund it consistently and annually to the extent you can afford
I did tell my daughters on this and they are following it.

Do the right thing especially when no one is watching.
Trust your instincts (and always learn from your mistakes, as they are the hardest part of your lifelong education)!
If he slaps, hits or threatens you - leave and don't look back. Boys don't need a father like that and you are a good mother.
Vote! Vote like everything you ever cared about depends on it. I know this is not what I would have answered six years ago.
For me it would be 'You are good enough'
'You can succeed.'
All my life ( not really just the important years) all l got from my parents was 'you're not good enough'
You're too stupid to do ( that).
I made sure l was the opposite with my kids. I always told them they could do whatever they put their minds to. Everything is achievable.

Remember, you can’t change your friends but you can change friends. Get rid of toxic relationships.
You will regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did. Exception: the things you did with tequila you will regret.
Own your life. The only one who can impact your life is you and the choices and commitments you make and apply to yourself.
Take time to enjoy the little things, they will be some of your most treasured memories
2 things.
You are only in competition with yourself. Don’t to be like the smith’s or Jones’s’. Improve upon yourself and you will go far.
Always follow your heart/gut. Your mind can confuse you but if it feels right (or wrong) in your heart/gut it will steer you in the right direction.
