Regarding Ali/Foreman: Great example of adversaries who later became friends. Another example that really impressed me was Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. I thought those two would try to kill each other if they met off the court. Then, they did that sneaker commercial together that began a lifelong friendship.
Regarding Robert Duvall: He could do anything, and did. Most stories ignore or gloss over his real military service. He was drafted in 1953, and served a tour in the Army as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. Honorably discharged.
Bill, the lessons of this story, and the patterns of humanity (of those two fighters/friends) are an example of something we desperately need to duplicate. Thanks for writing it.
I once heard a customer service metaphor called the “Tip of the Iceberg.” It said you typically only hear concerns from 2% of your customers, the point being that you need to uncover the other 98% to really understand the true reality.
It sounds to me like this is an apt metaphor for the Epstein files given the newly released news by Britain’s channel 4. Leave it to the Brits to report REAL US news.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” What training, preparation and strategy! What a marvelous boxer! What an authentic person!!
“I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like…victory. Son, do you want to surf or fight?” Like Ali, Robert Duval will always be known as one of the greatest himself.
I’ve never been a boxing fan as the brutality and corruption in the matches was just too much. I could and did admire the great Ali. By the way, I’m promoting a small film titled THE CUT that came out last year. It stars Orlando Bloom and Caitríona Balfe. Boxing fans might give it a look. Streaming on Paramount+ or for rent on Prime.
Bill - I read what you publish every day and enjoy it immensely. What you published today is special. I'm old enough to remember that fight well (I was 12 at the time), but I've never heard about the punch that wasn't thrown. Your tying it to today is brilliant. I wish everyone could read this. I hope that many others will listen to this message. Thanks!
Great story. Well told. Thanks Bill. 😊

To add to Duvall’s leaving us this week we can now add Rev Jesse Jackson’s name to the list.

Wow Bill, another great one. Not much of a boxing fan, but a big fan of long friendships. Thanks for telling us about this one!
Couldn't happen today.
Could not happen.
Too many "competitor" take the competition to mean overkill. Uber vengeance as rewardable
Dr James Kimmell, Yale has studied and published on the vengeance issue. Strongly recommend

Bill, that movie I mentioned yesterday, THE CUT, did I also say that Caitríona is Irish?
