I do remember your Harrison story but the 996(72)part sounds horrific. Such people are fools who will most likely burn through all that mania sooner rather than later. Besides, from what I’ve read lately, an AI bubble bursting could also work against such slavish work habits getting that well established. One could hope so at least.

I wanted to read about the Facebook lawsuit resolution but that link didn’t work.

And yes, the second act of WICKED will be really good. Having seen the show both on and on the road as well as the movie, the backside of the story will be well worth seeing.

Yes, I have done it. I had the badges to show for that period: irritating illnesses or symptoms, lack of sleep, divorce, breakdown of relationships etc.

Would I do it again? Not a chance: no-one ever said on their death bed: "I should have spent more time at the office (working)" - maybe not even Steve Jobs?!?

Now I hope that I am smarter and have that experience, I don't believe that kind of life correlates to wealth and especially not happiness. Balance is everything and unless one stops to smell the roses what is the point?

Exactly—- Bill should use his way-back machine to pull up the numerous articles & lists he’s published about happiness. None mention a badge for the workaholic, the so-called acceptable addiction

May I add, so many people want to brag about how busy they are - on the phone, oh hold on, gotta get this call, will get back to you

I live in an area with a lot of retired people - they have to impress you with what they USED to do - we call them PIPs - Or wanna be PIPs - Previously Important People. Can’t get into conversations with them before they try to impress you with their so-called Previous importance… what do they do now? Mope about everything

Yes, definitely an egotistical framing and perspective and attachment to form (the form of their old lives, roles etc.) We have to transcend and get back to the basics of why humans are so amazing - in our connections with each other that doesn't require 72-hour work weeks.

I thought that corporate America was heading towards a four day work week, not going the other way. I spent over 40 years working 5 days a week, then nine more months working 4 days a week, and can tell you that the latter was a lot better. None of these people working 996 will look back on their death bed and be glad they spent all that time working. Youth is really wasted on the young.

I wonder if the world will ever see all the Jeffrey Epstein files. Since nothing ever really disappears off the internet, I am surprised no hacker has gotten hold of all those emails. And I also wonder where all the other victims are, although I do realize just how hard it would be to come forward.

I am semi-retired / unemployed. I spent most of my career in Silicon Valley. I've worked at eight start-up companies - five of those companies no longer exist and went bankrupt. Of the remaining three, two were bought by larger companies. Total amount that I benefitted from stock options: $0. Sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're not. Some of my former colleagues have benefitted greatly by being at the right place at the right time, although as one friend mentioned, "it isn't a life-changing amount of wealth". Perhaps because I saw many of my employers going bankrupt, and I never benefitted beyond my salary (either at small companies or larger companies), that I was never motivated to work 996 / 72 hours per week. Some of my colleagues may have worked that intensively, but they benefitted as much as me. One may think that by working hard that you can control your fate and directly benefit from your work, but far more powerful factors are happening that you cannot understand and cannot foresee. I worked an honest 40 hours a week, and sometimes 48 hours when work demanded extra effort, but I prioritized physical and mental health and my family after I completed my commitment to my employers.
