Thanks for commenting. One virtue I'd learned along the road somewhere is the idea of being skeptical but not cynical. So, while I'd be skeptical of a lot of what I read, I don't think avoiding all "MSM" is the answer.
Same with politicians.
Sunshine: yes. But wear sunscreen and a hat, especially if you are in your 50s and have a name like Murphy.
Question everything — kind of related to the skeptical/cynical discussion.
The last 3 ... I'm mixed on. We are social beings who seek crowds, most of us. Be your own master, yes. But as for not caring what society thinks of you — I think we have too many examples of people not caring what society thinks of them today.
Bill, Thank You for this 7 Things and 7 Other Things post! I am in the first year of "Re-fire"ment and I greatly value tips on the brain, memory, and cognitive skills. I am also stirred by your reminder of Sunday's Trump Rally. I am prompted to ask, "where are the honest, fair minded, decent White folks" who sit in silence while these blatant racist and misogynist actions continue?? I pray we hear from them on Nov 5th with majority, indisputable numbers that solidy Democracy for all Americans!
I would expand habit 6 to say food is medicine. If we put garbage in the body our filtration systems become overwhelmed and ineffective. If you don’t want dementia, eat right and exercise so the brain can always have the right amount of blood to stay alive.
My brother died at 60 as the result of multiple strokes. My father spent the last 27 years of his life falling deeper into dementia until it killed him. Both had atrocious diets and both were sedentary.
As an addition to the 7 other things article about the movements of leaders being revealed by their security detail’s use of fitness trackers.
This is nothing new.
The US military has long viewed the fitness trackers as an OpsSec problem. Revealing the locations of military bases, how many troops are there, or if a specialize unit showed up. While most people might think this is a problem for someone else, it is an indicator of how much the technology we bring into our lives can have second order effects. Such as limiting our privacy and putting on the web more than what we intended.
I’ve got the reading, coffee and chocolate all well in hand. I’m going to add STOP WORRYING! If worrying solved problems, there would be peace in the world. Worry wastes energy that few of us have to spare. Also, most of the time what we worry about never happens. Stopping this habit will not only make you happier, you’ll be easier to be around.
Here are two of the three caffeine studies. These are associations: the researchers do not claim causation.
1. August 2018
“In the very large UK Biobank cohort, coffee drinking was associated inversely with all-cause mortality, including in those drinking at least 8 cups per day, in both slow and fast metabolizers of caffeine, and in consumers of ground, instant, and decaffeinated coffee. Our results are based on observational data and should be interpreted with caution”
Association of Coffee Drinking With Mortality by Genetic Variation in Caffeine Metabolism
“In this cohort of Chinese adults, higher consumption of caffeine at midlife, via coffee and tea, was associated with a reduced likelihood of physical frailty in late life.”
Consumption of Coffee, Tea, and Caffeine at Midlife, and the Risk of Physical Frailty in Late Life
It's easy to say Sleep Well, but it's a lot more difficult to actually sleep well. I am finding the older I get, the less refreshed I feel on waking, even if I get 8+ hours a night.
Frankly, it’s never too late to learn a new language- regardless of what a study says. Remember, we’re all different- we shouldn’t put ourselves in boxes
#1 Vitamins yes! I recently found through a blood test that I was Iron deficient. Turns out that was the solution to a flip floppy heart thing that doctors spent a terribly long time missing through many other tests.
#7 I've done here for a long time. Sadly, I now have to stop before the 7 other things... As there is little to learn, other than the political leaning of the author or the power of medias ability to push narratives.
Interestingly I was slightly pigeon toed as a child and have a natural left-leaning. Surprisingly though recent polar shifts and gravitational forces have given the appearance of a starboard tilt. Ultimately giving me a unique perspective that leads me to put down the internet early on most days.
Bill, I was wanting to read more about the study in Frontiers in Psychology on "Reading for Pleasure" but I'm not finding the journal article on the Frontiers in Psychology website. Any chance you have a link?
Love this!! Thank you!!
How to de-clog your brain and mind:
Avoid the MSM.
Avoid all politicians.
Get plenty of sun as your body and mind love it.
Question everything you hear and read.
Give up your desire to be part of the crowd.
Care not for what society thinks of you.
Be thy own master.
And vote!

So, I got 1 and 7 solidly in hand.

Is your right leg slightly shorter than your left? Asking for AI.

I just saw this and thought it worth sharing. It is from a store in Peculiar, MO:
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.”
