I appreciated your spin on this, Bill. Written like a true optimist! My own reaction to that list would be to self-select way the heck out. Not because I wouldn't be able to meet the required interview standards but because I'd be disinclined to work for a company whose list of don't-dos was that long, that rigid, and that out of step with cultural norms. I guess if you get 60K applicants, you get to be as rigid and out of step as you please.
Does anyone else find it strange that Verizon and Bank of America suffered service outages just a few days apart? To my knowledge, there been no explanation of the source of either outage. Are there forces at work here that seek to damage our national infrastructure or, at least, hold it hostage?
Communications from Florida through NC have been significantly disrupted as a result of the hurricane. Power remains out in much of Greenville, SC and we are just today getting stable enough Verizon cellular service to get online. The cell towers rely on power. Duke Power had teams come in all the way from Joplin, MO.
After buying a system a couple of years ago I am definitely a HUGE fan of Generac!!
Why is it “billionaires” can buy or create businesses like truth social and twitter and then immediately run them into the ground? I would sure hate to own stock/investments in either company.
When flying I sure appreciate airline staff looking like they are professional, serious about their jobs and mean business. The Delta list ensures a better chance of hiring the right people in the right roles. I’m sure they aren’t as concerned for the appearance and professionalism of baggage handlers! Airline safety is a different animal from making coffee at Starbucks.
But, Darel, isn’t it wonderful that neither you nor I have to buy stock With Twitter or any of those others? Meanwhile, you and I both have to with our taxpayer dollars are supporting NPR which is a total progressive left… And google this if you don’t believe it but Darel, I know you are a total progressive left and so you love supporting it, but I don’t but I’m forced to support NPR, and I hate supporting NPR, but with my taxpayer dollars I am forced to support NPR. Why should I do that?
As an HR Pro, I can attest to how poorly some applicants present during the interview process for public facing roles, including lack of "proper undergarments".
My favorite story about this kind of pre-interview detail is from a colleague who's husband worked for a US railroad. They were told to be on time, not wear jeans, and bring a pen. There were about 300 seats in the hotel ballroom where this took place. First strike, the doors were locked and manned precisely at 8am, knocking out a few. Then they asked anyone who was wearing slacks to stand up, and promptly excused anyone who was sitting in jeans. About 50 walked out. Then the recruiter held up a bunch of pens in a rubber band and said raise your hand if you need one. Anyone with their hand raised was excused. A little less than half of those initial folks were left. The recruiter then said, "There are a lot of important rules you have to follow in this business, and if you can't follow three simple ones before you even get the job, you're not the right person for us." Pretty striking
The famous Latin mistranslation made my laugh of the day. After 5 years of studying the language in high school (I am so old the standard high school years at the time went to Grade 13), it was fun to see my education still is relevant to today!
I am older (60) and old fashioned so I appreciate this list! However, it amazes me that people have to have a list like this to know how to dress , etc!🤷🏻♀️
Years ago when I lived in NYC, there was a commercial for the New York State Lottery that said you can't win if you don't play (or something to that effect). Well, if someone is really serious about being a flight attendant for Delta, they would apply and do the appropriate things to ace their interview. Otherwise, why bother?
Today’s newsletter was really nostalgic! It takes me back to 1964 and my interview with Pan Am! What I attributed my success to was 2 things. I had applied for 2 jobs, Pan Am and the Peace Corps. I would accept whichever came through first! But Pan Am had an interview technique which was popular at that time. I was interviewed by a team of 2 men and one woman. At one point they were very hostile and insulting to me to see how I could handle a similar situation in flight. I was so stunned by that all I could do was sit there with a smile on my face. I was hired!!
The vaccine blurb got me to respond. I am a retired emergency medicine physician. In the almost 4 decades of practice I have seen changes in infectious diseases. Prior to the H Influenza vaccine, we would see frequent critical kids with life threatening infections. Then a generation of vaccinated kids caused those infections to become rare. Younger physicians never saw those same infections, until the anti-vax wave hit. When I retired one of the questions we asked parents of seriously ill kids was if that had the vaccines. The approach to working up the cause of the infections differed on the answer. It seems like we may be slipping back into the dark ages with the anti science wave.
This reminds me of a written test and I don’t recall exactly what it is, but I could bring it up in my long ago notes in my psychology classes. But it starts off with write your name #2 write the date and then it goes down through a list of about 30 questions saying this will be timed, read thru each question carefully, #3 circle the second letter of your name, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blah blah blah blah and then you get down to the last question & it ends with answer only questions #1 & 2
Hahaha - funny to finish the test in record time, look up & watch others frantically scribbling answers to allllllllll the questions
How very sad that what I grew up learning, now has to be written down ahead of applying for a job on how to dress and behave? What are parents raising now? Animals?
Call me old fashioned I guess. It seems as though common sense has gone on a permanent vacation.
So happy to see that Ft.Liberty is sending 1000 active duty personnel into my mountains. There are so many there that are totally cut off. So far, all my friends in all affected areas that I’ve touched base with are ok so far. I just hope the rest of the hurricane season avoids everyone trying to dig out from Helene from Florida on up.
Oh yes, the news has just come out that the dockworkers strike is over! Yay! I think some details are yet to be worked out but for the most part, another crisis has been averted.
Was it something in the air? 😅

😱
maybe use the quote: Be prepared...???

The best way to deal with a narcissist is to not engage with them. I am not engaging.
# # #
Total hahaha engaged!!!!
Plus you’re stealing EXACTLY what I’ve said to you, which is EXACTLY what narcissists do. Remember, I’m trained & know what I’m talking/writing about
similar to the Boy Scout motto? be prepared... uh, didn't moms always used to say something like wear clean underwear in case you're in an accident???
And wasn't there a recent posting about the awful pay for flight attendants? But if I remember Delta might pay the best....
& it should have been an April Fool's joke w/ Bank of America --- open your account &, Hey, nothing to see here 😱

If they must wear proper undergarments that are not visible to anyone else, how would Delta know?
