I am sure the goons of psychiatry have a classification for not being able to remember the word you are seeking as being some sort of mental health problem. So, go take a drug. That fixes everything.
One would think that's the answer, based on the continual drug commercials that are everywhere! They're normalizing medication use in people's minds. Wow.
If the only tool you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail. There is a proper tool for every job. Sometimes the tool is medication. It’s not an all or nothing proposition. If you have an infection you wouldn’t hesitate to use an antibiotic.
Having a good relationship with a good PCP allows you to have the necessary conversations. It is a partnership and your doc can help you through making the appropriate decisions based on your goals and objectives.
🙂 hi Darrell- I’ve been clicking likes for you recently. Today I have to do more
I’m older than you & go to a Dr who specializes in’elder care’. She’s a foreigner - India? ,altho has been here forever. When I moved to this area I carefully researched to find a good match for me. Her first choice is NEVER a medication. In fact, 30 minutes of walking & a Mediterranean diet would be her choice. I doubt she says the diet specifically to all but she knows how I eat. The walking IS her advice when possible.
Anyway, she always listens & discusses all options. She does recommend blood work, probably for folks my age it’s precautionary. And of corse all the regular stuff like colonoscopy & for women, mammograms
She’s popular - has been unable to accept new patients for several years, altho her practice has grown considerably. I don’t know the others - I hope they follow her lead
I’m in no way inferring what type of doctor you, personally, should select. I was agreeing with your statement about ‘a partnership between you & your doctor’
Of course I have a story that tells one that the problem of not finding the right word at the appropriate time can and will happen at any age. The story that follows happened when I was about 28 or 29 years old.
Case in point: I used to be active in my local community college little theater group. One of our best productions was THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA made popular on Broadway by Carol Burnett.
Our cast was perfect. You just know when everyone is firing on all cylinders. Everyone is enthusiastic and ready to do what it takes to pull off a successful production. For instance, our director had arranged for rented costumes since it was a period production. Just about everyone’s costume fit-except mine. It was heavy velvet and big enough for two of me. This was maybe a week before opening night so I said I would make my own costume which I did all in two days. As the Queen Mother it had to at least look regal enough to stay within the storyline. Long story short, it worked well. We had a great opening night(Thurs), and three sold out performances all leading up to our Sunday matinee. The big thing in any kind of acting is maintaining one’s character NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS OR WHO SCREWS UP! I don’t know if some cast members came in after too much partying the night before or what happened but The Jester had an opening number that is supposed to set the stage for the entire story. He blew it; not bad but bad enough that even if the audience didn’t catch it, the rest of us on the stage sure did. But we all stayed in character and carried on after he got himself turned back around and finished his song. After a few minutes it was my turn. In the script my next lines were noted as the “Mamalogue”, not Queen Agravain as it was a literal monologue by the queen character all about her precious son, Dauntless, and how not just any old princess would do for her sweet boy.
I had practiced all that to the point of dreaming about it and for four shows had pulled it off faultlessly; but not that Sunday. Fairly soon after beginning all the verbiage that was to follow, there was a word I needed to say that began with an A and it was as though that one damn word had dropped into the depths of Hell never to be remembered again but I stayed in character and pulled another word out of my freaked brain that made no sense but it started with a stupid A! My family was in the audience and a few of them knew what I should have said as they had helped me run lines. I just hoped the rest of the audience didn’t pay close enough attention to let it bother them.
The first act was a bit rocky but we got through it. Needless to say, our director had notes which we took like a dose of castor oil then we went out and had a great second and third acts.
I think about that incident often even today when words fail to come but instead of substituting a nonsense filler, I have time and the internet to help.
Now age 85, I am one of those people who usually need help finding that last word.
I want to make a comment about the final word on the studies conducted recently. Their work may be exactly pure, I accept it.
I was already 'looking for that next word' at age 45. I do not know why. I only know that my in-laws completed their own sentences until their deaths.
My parents and my mother-in-law lived to 88 years plus, 2 into their 90s. I do not recall ever hearing an "old" person trying to remember a word to finish a sentence. Never.

You do your doc and I will do mine. Who knows which is right given the individual circumstances?
How old do you think I am?
I think you said you’re 70? I’m older

We’re good. And I am 70.
