I know that I make a conscious effort to smile when answering every call as an insurance agent, and the vast majority of my calls go extremely well. It helps to start with a smile.

During my brief stint in radio, my director actually bought balloons and placed them in the studio that encouraged us to smile more. Smile but don’t force it too much is what I say to that.

Unfortunately, my boss didn’t give me much to smile about. A forced smile is not really a smile.

I think I posted this sometime in the last few weeks, about making cold calls - always put a smile on, it helps.

And in my days as a Weight Watcher leader, the topic of 'feel good' often came up. I would pass out little gimmicky things for members to take home to help them remember the topic of the day. I passed out pencils for 'Smile' day, because if you put a pencil in between your lips, it forces your lips into a natural smile, & that ACTUALLY registers to your brain that you're smiling. <---- eta: ok, who just tried it?

On my front porch I have a sign I made "Smiles Exchanged Here". It works, I greet a lot of delivery folks, etc., & we both exchange our smiles 😉

I usually start my day by reading a host of articles, newsletters, etc from the center left to the center right. So I began my day this morning with my cup of coffee reading George Wills' article in which, among other things, he criticized college professors for spending too little time teaching and more time chasing grants and conducting studies. Then my next stop was reading today's Understandably in which I read that professors from Harvard, Colombia, Carnegie Mellon, Yale and the East China Normal University conducted studies on whether Air B&B hosts did better at renting their listing if they smiled for their listing photo. Is this how college professors are spending their time away from the classroom? It's just another confirmation that the countryI love is slowly going down the tubes! Am I fatalistic? Yep!

I would say more pessimistic since a fatalist assumes things are predetermined and they, as a result, are powerless. I cannot imagine you think you are powerless!!

I appreciate your response. Maybe I'm just worn out by Trumps "distraction of the day." Or maybe I'm just getting too old to care and I am feeling powerless.

I agree with you 100% in both regards. Know you are not alone in these feelings. I am so sick of hearing his name every day linked to insanity.

I also read the article by George Will - have enjoyed him for a long time. The discouraging info about the lack of student effort & grade inflation is just as discouraging as what you report... Maybe the professors have to get away from the classroom because if they see too much of the students' works they would be too discouraged...???? Hopefully those tenured profs aren't plagiarizing their works, hmmm, in order to get promoted to, perhaps, Pres of the University...

Smiling only works if it's genuine, otherwise it's just another scam. People can tell the difference. I smile a lot because I am happy person, my smile involves the full face, not just the month.

My philosophy has usually been to always smile in order to keep everyone guessing about what you might be up to. Also, for the women who might be reading this, smiling uses fewer muscles than frowning; keeping you looking young.

I wanted to read about those bazillionaires and taxes but the link didn’t work 🫢. Those climbing catfish though were really interesting. Newly discovered species so their habits are all brand new to scientists studying them.

My son called so I quit reading.
