After covid, weight gain is everywhere. What’s interesting is that instead of dieting with an eating plan, most of my clients, including myself are cutting back on how much they eat instead. My main meal is lunch. With a small breakfast and a snack for dinner. I sleep much better now. As for the weight? Well we’ll see.

I enjoy eating in the morning. I love my lunch but is is a bit lighter. And when din din rolls around I have my martini and a very small portion. I sleep really well because my body is not working hard on digesting a heavy meal. I do eat a piece of dark chocolate while reading or spoiling myself with some TV. Sleep is my most valuable arsenal in my tool box. I am a much nicer person if I have gotten a good nights sleep. My weight, my digestion track and my since of well being are the gifts from this routine

I, too, enjoy reading those types of studies. It's always been about portion size but it's true that your body doesn't have to work as hard in the evening to digest all that food. But to your point, anything that will add a bit more time to the clock. I've also like the information on the Blue Zone population and longevity. Interesting stuff there, too! I didn't get to see the Derby so thanks for attaching the race. Wow! what a comeback.

Another advantage to not eating later in the evening is for whatever reason your metabolism doesn’t work as well and

Acid reflux may ensue

You might find the approach found in the AARP supported book “The Whole Body Reset” is in keeping with your 50 years and older needs. The bullet on the book’s cover notes “Stop Age-Related Weight Gain with the power of Protein Timing.” The practice put forth by author Stephen Perrine (and co-author Heidi Skolnik) supports the research you reported in today’s newsletter.

Now, regarding AARP from this reader who approaches his 70th birthday in August. Twenty years ago (here’s math help - when I was 49 and on the cusp of the soon to come senior discounts), I stopped into the Hardee’s on my way to work for a to-go coffee and cheese biscuit. The amount charged was less than I expected. I asked the worker why and she smiled and said, “Senior Discount.” I remonstrated by saying “But I’m only 49!” Once I put my emotional response in its proper place, I accepted the freely given discount. Over the next 18 months I never asked for a senior discount. I decided to to a simple survey of how old a worker thought I was. My ratio was 85% old, 15% young. I fully embraced my worthiness of a senior discount on my double-nickel birthday (55) when Tuesday shopping at Kroger meant 10% off the whole order. And, up until about 18 months ago, Dunkin’ Donuts had a free donut deal with the presentation of an AARP card. Good thing such a temptation is gone as the AARP focus is now protein timing!

I live in the Louisville, Ky metro area, so the Derby is not new to me. When that horse started out of the gate I commented to someone next to me, look at how far out he is and he moved all the way to the left quickly. It was cool to watch at the beginning, but way cool to see the aerial view later of him working his way up. Great race, and listening to the owners, who lost 13 horses I believe in a fire a few years ago, much needed joy.

Horse racing, especially the Triple Crown, has been susceptible to bad behavior. I'll wait until the doping test results are back. Also, I think they should check to see who placed any $100,000 bets on an 80-1 horse to win.

Incredibly disturbing! How do we identify and fund smart, honest, logical, and fair-minded people of good intentions to run for political office?

Abortion. Surely no one thinks it is a wonderful thing. Yet, it is a solution to a problem. The problem is not abortion. The problem is unwanted pregnancy.

How can you tell people that they cannot prevent pregnancy AND they cannot terminate a pregnancy? What percentage of citizens can afford to have children year after year? Do we then police how often people can have sex if they are poor and cannot afford children? That seems as cruel as saying you are only allowed to have one child.

If the two opposing sides of the issue would/could combine their resources and work to solve the problem, the need for abortions could be nearly eliminated.

Real, appropriate, and timely human sexual education. Affordable and readily available pregnancy prevention methods (birth control is a misnomer). Parenting classes for all parents to better prepare them. Healthy foods and activities for children to return the average puberty onset age to normal (105 lbs. for girls!). Peer pressure to encourage abstinence until adulthood. Reduction in sexual marketing to children and teens. The list of solutions goes on and on.

It may sound impossible to some. Yet, with quality leadership and average people instead of radicals pulling together, it can happen.

Allowing radials to force their beliefs on others is always a bad plan. We must identify and support good leaders who will work for the citizens, not special interests.

I am simply unable to comprehend anyone saying they are going to make contraception illegal.

I know Roe-versus-Wade is a hot button topic. I think it is possible to be pro-life (as I am) but still NOT want Roe-versus-Wade overturned. The nuanced people are left out of this. I am hearing some politicians say that 85% of Americans are pro-choice. In fact, depending on what poll you are looking at, it is more like 60% and the numbers GO DOWN the longer the pregnancy goes on. For example, 3 months into a pregnancy, Americans' support for abortion goes dramatically down. I am also seeing a lot of catastrophizing amongst politicians. For example, the Supreme Court overturns Roe-versus-Wade and the next thing, they will outlaw women getting personal credit, LBGTQ people cannot marry, women can't buy houses and so forth. This is political hay for both sides. I may be in denial but I am not reading anymore on this. The human brain is not meant for 24/7 news feed. Jeopardy has a new champion and for me, that is all that matters now!

When I was 20, I was in Vietnam eating C-rats and anything else I could find. My friends had a pool of how long I would live and the oldest was 26 years. I am 75, good health, 45 years of running including marathons. I have been eating this way since birth as we lived in a farming community, and it became a habit when I normalized.

I’ve waited to comment on your main topic only because this is how I’ve been living now for three years. Having dieted since the age of 13 and Metracal, see-sawing up and down with my weight and spending enough money on clothes to fit my shrinking or ballooning body parts to have retired in luxury years ago, I thought, what the hell. I may as well try alternative fasting, stick with it and see where it leads. So on May 1, 2019 I began by having surgery so I could start with a bang and a 22 hour fast. I had read to drink water whenever I felt hungry but to allow at least 16 hours between your last and first meals, eating only within an 8 hour window but to try not to let yourself finish your supper much later than 5 PM. It took me 3 months to even begin to start dropping weight. That was how resistant my body was to dieting. I weighed, and still do, weigh every morning after going to the bathroom and before drinking coffee, getting dressed or eating breakfast. After passing the 3 month stage though I started losing. It wasn’t fast but it was reasonably steady. By Christmas I had lost 25 pounds, painlessly. I phased out my smoothies and my dairy intake for a while. I don’t limit what I eat but I have found that I would eat less than I used to. Now when I eat out, I put half in a to-go box for another meal. I’ve leveled out now for a total lost of 35 pounds so I’ve stayed steady now for about 2 years. By the way, you have to vary your calorie intake. You don’t want your body to think you’re starving and you have to still eat foods that will keep stuff moving all the way through your system.

This has worked well for me. I’m sure not going to speak for anyone else. We’re all so different that I wouldn’t dare in any case.
