If you saw Hamilton and loved the soundtrack, I'll bet I just sparked a song in your head. If not, no worries. Also, 7 other things worth knowing today.
You writing about about Independence Day has me thinking about Canada Day July 1st. As we prepare to celebrate Canada Day, I'm feeling particularly proud to be a friendly Canadian. I'm a big fan of the country rock artist from Cochrane, Ontario, Mitch Jean. Mitch is a full-time musician that is not only a great entertainer, he is just a real pleasant person to be around.
I started listening to his Cheers to Friday! live streams last September, and I now look forward to listening to those live streams every Friday night, even enjoying the replays often too as I get work done around the house.
As Mitch gets closer to monetizing his YouTube channel (needs 1000 subscribers, currently has 743), I invite the readers of Understandably to do me a solid and subscribe to Mitch Jean's YouTube channel. He already has the 4000 watch hours needed. What can I say? He has a lot of great content on that YouTube channel.
Done! Mitch is French-Canadian? Country music sounds better in French IMO.
Happy Canada Day to ya, neighbor! I’m a fan as my late husband played(briefly) for the Tiger Cats. Unfortunately he got a severe shoulder injury his second year in. It was a career ender but he and his first family stayed in Hamilton until an orthopedist back here in the states fixed it for him. He took me up there after we married and I fell in love with your country and Canadians. I keep hoping someone will want to adopt me so I can move up there.
Yes, Mitch is French Canadian, as am I. Thank you so much for subscribing. Mitch does sing some songs in French. I know you’ll enjoy Mitch’s content on YouTube. He’s got lots there, 60 videos! Hope you join us Friday night for Cheers to Friday!
Thanks! I subscribed. Just watched and listened to “How I Love You”. I’m hooked. Love Canada 🍁 anyways. Grew up going back and forth through Windsor Tunnel or across Ambassador Bridge for many family outings and more. Second Home for me!! Thanks again. Yes I will Celebrate with you July 1. Only the Best CANADA 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for subscribing! I appreciate it. With talent like Mitch, I feel I must share his YouTube channel with people. He’s an amazing performer. I admire his gumption for going after his dream of becoming a full-time musician in his 40s. His song All I Ever Need is about this. Here is a link for that song:
‘See’ you during the Cheers to Friday! live stream on Canada Day from 8-10 pm ET. I play the live through the YouTube app on Apple TV and listen with the stereo speakers. I comment on the Facebook live on my iPhone. I so enjoy it.
I would love to hear from those who voted "no" on this. What is the actual argument for one nation trying to take over another sovereign nation? Do those readers also think it would be ok for the US to try to take over Mexico or Canada (or Cuba or Haiti or whatever), just because they're next door? Can Putin do what he wants, just because he wants to?
For some reason, the voting isn't working on my phone but I would have voted no.
Not because I think attacking the Ukraine was the right thing to do but because it's too early to write the history of the conflict. If Putin wins, the poll is a minor footnote. If he loses, the poll is shown as the will of the people.
History is written by the victors. That's why you don't study that Stalin killed millions of his own people from the 30's onward. Or that the battle of Britain, though framed as a battle against a superior air force was actually a battle between two air forces of similar size and capability.
For the avoidance of doubt, I strongly feel all available means should be used to curtail the expansionist policy of Russia in the Ukraine and other countries.
I'm quite certain that some of the 29,183,290 of us in Texas may take some offense to this. I'm also quite certain that most of us a truly proud to be a part of the great United States of America. I know I am.
Better reserve that Y'all Haul now. After I read what the ruling political party of Texas wants, I have no more use for the state. This coming from someone who lived over west of Cowtown for a bunch of years.
I'm not quite sure when Texas backslid so much. Must have something to do with those people who bought a pickup and then never put squat in the bed.
I'm here to tell you that when I read all that bigoted, vile, disgusting, and outright just damn wrong, crap that supposed "platform" was, I went and cried because the beautiful state I had lived in was no more.
Don't mess with Texas? Please. Y'all are so damn pitiful these days your cops are afraid of one kid with a gun. Feds had to do the job for you. Feds. Y'all should've sent Abbott and Paxton in first. Oh, right. All hat, no cattle. Just like everybody else there, it seems. Pissed? Go on then, prove me wrong. Take the state back. Go.
Did something cause all this hate you put into your note? I respectfully ask that you not lump folks all together as it is not the right thing to do. I wish for you a better rest of your day. Sincerely, Dola
The story about Officer Tipping really shocked me. The institutional knee-jerk attempt to cover its own behind ( 'he fell down while grappling' when in reality the injuries are unbelievably catastrophic) is simply apalling.
Your letter today, all over the map, is indicative of the whole world today. I had already been thinking about this before your letter popped in. I had listened earlier today to a talk by Margaret Hefferman (ted.com) where she spoke of uncertainty. She spoke much on business practices. My world is based on predictability, 80/20 principle, Just in Time. MH stated clearly that instead of ' Just in Time ' we should realign to " Just in Case ". I thought that was appropriate to today's world. That means a lot of different things to everyone, I am certain. For me, I think I'll have an extra cup of coffee, take a peak at my 401K, Re-do some of the 80/20 work I have done recently and see where ' Just in case ' takes me. Bill, thank you, I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient and humble reader, Today and Always. Respectfully, LLL. ( From the 28th state to join the Union )
Hi Bill. As a United Empire Loyalist among many North of the border we wonder when America is going to make reparations for our lost wealth. Stolen farms, houses, businesses and goods. Not to mention the torment inflicted. History presents facts. To the winner goes the spoils has been and continues to be America’s mantra. And as the saying goes greed never ends well. Perhaps this is an appropriate time for America to reflect on its path and treatment of many.
Who the hell is this 3% that voted "No"? I mean, was this an honest no, like you secretly want to take over the world? Or just a contrarian, go against the crowd no? Or a sarcastic no?
Well. The initial question was - is there an issue that 70% of Americans can agree on? I’d say the answer is overwhelmingly yes! So, who really cares why the 2-3% chose differently? I sure don’t. I wondered for a millisecond, but that was all the time I was willing to waste.
I see your point. It's a direct quote from the family lawyer. I guess he or she was trying to parse the fact that Tipping was brutally beaten and survived for a few days but ultimately the family had to take him off life support.
With the 4th of July right around the corner, I believe it is our duty, yes duty, to recognize America's latest true patriot, Cassidy Hutchinson. To watch her stride into that room and lay bare the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth was awe inspiring.
Is she going to suffer the slings and arrows from people she believed in and worked with? Of course, just look at who they are. Does she care? Not one whit, as far as I could see. What she does care about is democracy and America.
Her politics and mine are probably miles apart. But I get the feeling that we could have a calm debate over an issue and remain civil after we were done. She understands one thing above all else, it's country first, party second. Too many of us have forgotten that simple rule. Looking at you, Mitch McConnell.
I’ve read where the Secret Service is willing to say Cassidy was lying about tfg fighting the agents to go to the Capitol but then I remembered VP Pence being afraid to allow his Secret Service detail to take him anywhere during the riots because he knew they were big trumpers. There was also the thing about President Biden asking for his old Secret Svc. detail rather than use any of the fg’s detail. Sounds like the Secret Service may have accumulated a good bit of political tarnish over the years. Anyone remember all the screw ups during the Obama administration? I wondered then why there wasn’t a thorough housecleaning then but then what’s-his-face got chosen so there was no need I suppose.
Cassidy didn't testify that she saw Trump fighting with agents or trying to grab the wheel. She testified, if I have it right, that she didn't see it herself but was told afterward that it had happened. If agents who were actually there want to correct the record that would be welcome. But they should at least be on the record (right now just anonymous "sources") and preferably under oath.
I, like you, would like some clarification under oath. I just remember 3 things about the Secret Service. 1. They were a total embarrassment during President Obama’s 2 terms. 2. Joe Biden requested his old Secret Service detail from when he was VP & 3. VP Pence would not go anywhere with them during the storming of the Capitol. He was afraid he’d never be returned in a timely manner.
I tried to respond to the poll. When I clicked on my response, a web version of the newsletter opened. I didn't think that my response was recorded, so I clicked again. I got pop up asking me for my email address because the poll is only open to subscribers. I am a subscriber, so I entered my email. Got a new pop up indicating that I needed to subscribe. My vote is that the polling feature isn't working.
(Just imagine if Obama had tried to stay in office after losing. Imagine if he even threw his plate against the wall. Such behavior would never have been tolerated by his opponents.)
Imagine if President Obama had done 1/100,000,000,000 of what tfg has already done and keeps on doing. Tfg’s acolytes would have had a hemorrhage and hemorrhoids both.
Before the Civil War, it was the United States of America are. After the Civil War, it was the United States of America is.
I believe Putin (the Mad Man of Moscow) made a big mistake making war on Ukraine. It is now a lose-lose situation. He has set back Russia economically by decades. If he defeats Ukraine, it will be a shell of what it was, and the people will have to be ruled by force and never recognized by the West.

wonder what we'd do if Texas seceded
Cheer. Be gloriously happy. Celebrate the fact that our average I.Q. just went up 50 points.
I'm quite certain that some of the 29,183,290 of us in Texas may take some offense to this. I'm also quite certain that most of us a truly proud to be a part of the great United States of America. I know I am.

I won't justify your response. I will pray for you. Have a blessed evening.
No justification needed. Thank you for your prayers.
Katherine, you got it, woman!!
Ukraine didn't secede; it became independent when the USSR dissolved in 1991.
yes ma'am, just a little levity there, I'm all about levity.....;)

The poll would not launch for me - however, my response is "Yes".

Wow. Hadn’t heard of United Empire Loyalists until now. I will have to do more research, but I wouldn’t be holding my breath for reparations.
Wow Ian, you’re right. I hadn’t gotten that history about which you write. Where can I find it out?
There are a few UEL sites, here's one http://www.uelac.org/history.php. And a wiki article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_the_Loyalists and history https://www.npr.org/2015/07/03/419824333/what-happened-to-british-loyalists-after-the-revolutionary-war There are actually ongoing negotiations with the UEL descendants and the US Government. It's only been 200 years so far, interest is accumulating rather than waning.
I just want to say thanks for taking the time and effort to write a daily column. Don't always agree with what you say but always get to think about.
Who the hell is this 3% that voted "No"? I mean, was this an honest no, like you secretly want to take over the world? Or just a contrarian, go against the crowd no? Or a sarcastic no?
Inquiring minds want to know.
prehaps How the question was posed....prehaps they read it too quickly/they thought 'no he shouldn't have...or...in his mind he wasn't wrong......
Trying to decipher what others are thinking is always baffling,,,,;)
Well. The initial question was - is there an issue that 70% of Americans can agree on? I’d say the answer is overwhelmingly yes! So, who really cares why the 2-3% chose differently? I sure don’t. I wondered for a millisecond, but that was all the time I was willing to waste.
i've had a couple of people tell me they had difficulty with the poll; hit the wrong answer and couldn't change it. so it might be even more lopsided.
Well there’s no doubt in my mind you got your 70% with room to spare. 😊
Ingenious dance moves. I’ll not think of my alert tones the same way again, ever.
Not to be nit picky, but Officer Tipping wasn't "brutally injured". That implies that he survived. He was beaten to death. Huge difference.
I see your point. It's a direct quote from the family lawyer. I guess he or she was trying to parse the fact that Tipping was brutally beaten and survived for a few days but ultimately the family had to take him off life support.

Many in Trumps SS detail were MAGA fans and would say anything to protect their idol.

With all the issues facing our country, why is congress spending so much effort on 1/6? Didn’t they already impeach Trump for this?
None of these current witnesses had anything to say during the impeachment trial. Finally folks are starting to tell the truth about what they saw.
You mean like plant a spy in the opposing party’s campaign. Or hire a special prosecutor based on lies started by Hillary’s campaign.
What?
You can’t be serious.
I have the honor, Sir, to be your reader, your humble and obedient servant, David.
I'll bet that old turtle stayed out of politics....;)
