I am a New Yorker now living in another state. A fairly common phrase my NY coworkers would use with a request was “please and thank you”. Perhaps it’s also said in the state I currently live in, where politeness is normative (and “I’m sorry” often used for situations where speaker isn’t at fault) but I haven’t heard it yet.

I was born and lived the majority of my life in NJ. Your article was very amusing to me, and I found it to be very accurate! I now live in Florida and work in the tourist industry. I can pick out someone from the northeast a mile away because the majority of them are, politely put, very assertive. Being one of those born and bred there, I mean no malice (again, being polite), but working for the tourist industry I cannot afford to be anything but polite and am always "onstage" as we say here, but will admit that when I'm not at work, on occasion, I can be just as "assertive" as then next northerner. You can take the girl out of "Jersey", but you can't take the "Jersey" out of the girl.

While "please" and "thank you" are questioned/discussed, I find a similar polite phrase virtually wiped out. Who still says, in response to "thank you", "You're welcome"? Nowadays, saying thank you elicits a returning "thank you", or that pitiful non-response "No problem". Ugh.

I have watched the various videos multiple times.

Please ICE agents, if you want to stop a car, please shoot the tires, especially if they are turning away from you. That is quite effective and prevents the needless death of an American Citizen. Worst case, take a photo of the tag since you already have your phone out filming. I’m sure her 6-year old child - who no longer has a mother - would happily say “Thank you!”

Why does shooting at a car have to be the first reaction? If anything, jump out of the way rather than immediately reaching for your gun. That would provide greater protection than a bullet against inertia.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sadly, it seems like shoot first, ask questions later seems to be becoming the norm in The US.

Thank you, Bill for the enlightening article. I would like to request that you publish the entire list of states, please. Here in Ohio a common response to "thank you" is "my pleasure". I think that's a good replacement for "you're welcome".

I like “my pleasure” much more than “no problem!”

I'm in a super small rural town in Utah, and we have free youth sports. Nothing to pay to sign up and nothing to pay to play. At least in the elementary/middle school bracket. I'm not sure about high school. But I can't imagine paying for sports - it's part of the school program, so it's already paid for in taxes.

Also, interesting statistics on please/thank you!

From the South as a Boomer so “please” and “thank you” were hammered into my head. I raised my boys the same way. I can say both phrases in Spanish, French, German and Arabic along with “thank you” in Russian. Used to say “I’m sorry” a lot but canned that when I got older. Those words are for true apologies.

Allison Gill just posted a NYT analysis of the video where it’s clearly shown the ICE agent’s gun was clearing his holster while her tires were turned away from him. Along with that, Gill spoke on background with two attorneys who have defended officer involved shootings and have always gone to trial. Both think this case is unwinnable in court. Main sticking points were:

-“I could argue shot #1 and hope for an acquittal or a hung jury-but I can’t get there on shots 2 and 3”

-“A jury will not get past the turning of the wheels”

-“Denying medics throws self defense out the window”

Hated to read about the demise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. My granddad and his family probably read it before migrating South.

As for the new nutrition guidelines, they are one big dirty joke just like those who have proposed them.

#Thanks for your attention in this matter 😁.
