Outstanding essay today, Bill.

I believe one of the failings of education system is the movement away from teaching critical thinking skills, something essential in today’s world of (anti) social media, algorithms, and 24/7 news.

Marketing teaches us that a message needs to be heard at least five to seven times. When someone watches ANY cable news or subscribes to any other news source they have to be wary. Critical thinking skills are fundamental.

So ... why did Canadians immediatelly not believe Trump when he threatened to make Canada the 51st state, outlining all the benefits to be achieved, and with constant repetition. Why did we not immediatelly cave when Trump has battered our economy non-stop with tarrifs and uncertainty and shifting positions all the while claiming we would benefit from US control. Why did the Ukraine president suffer embarrassment and public humiliation while trying to work towards a win-win. Time for the studies you quoted to move into a new line of research that explores how and why people rationally choose to resist the irresistable offers that trigger irrational decisions.
