Good Morning Bill - a respectful disagreement from the hockey rules are better corner. My proposed change to the overtime rules would be simpler, first goal wins during the overtime period. I would reduce it to 3 penalty kicks, and if still tied, then penalty shots 4 and 5 are taken by the goalies, just to spice it up:)
Also, since Team USA is out I am rooting for the Western Hemisphere team
I had to read this in two halves because you sent me down a rabbit hole. Mrs. Murphy Jr. didn't look right to me. 3 of 4 AI agreed and so did Debretts. Junior doesn't transfer to your wife as it denotes your lineage, not hers.
Goodness I'm getting cranky in my old age.
As to penalty shoot outs, Budweiser ran a tongue in cheek commercial. Added time multi ball!!! I think it's a cracking idea but all my friends think I've lost my marbles.
I lost almost all interest in sports about 30 years ago. I am an avid bike rider but don’t even watch the Tour de France. Still, your soccer articles are interesting!
A lot to unpack on 7 Other Things today. This line from the Guardian link caught my attention. Seriously? Hegseth and this administration must REALLY dislike women.
“ Hegseth's announcement did not address the more than 231,000 women who serve as active duty service members in the US military.”
“The dramatic crackdown was triggered after Trump had raged over disclosures about the new plane, prompting his administration to rapidly deploy the investigation.”
From WaPo:
“Some physicians and researchers questioned the move and said some of Hegseth’s statements on testosterone Wednesday were not backed by research. Testosterone levels vary naturally over time, and it is unusual to screen patients for low testosterone unless there are symptoms, they said. “This is non-evidence-based and could cause harm,” said Adriane Fugh-Berman, a professor in the department of pharmacology and physiology at Georgetown University.”
It sounds like DHS recognizes that their mercenaries should no longer stop vehicles and need more training. In fact, why would any car stop for a non-police vehicle? Trump disagrees and would rather continue the oppression, often times of American citizens or those that are legally here.
Thank goodness for leakers. It didn’t take a team of rocket scientists to know this plane was not ready for its mission. The experts have long said it would take much longer to take part and retrofit this plane to be as secure as the existing fleet. Maybe they could purchase some of the new trump gold-painted coins and get off the hook.
“The dramatic crackdown was triggered after Trump had raged over disclosures about the new plane, prompting his administration to rapidly deploy the investigation.” Trump is only interested in how the plane looks and was primarily interested in showing off. He put the lives of everyone on board at risk for his vanity, so much so that he finally had to be told”no.”.
Penalty kicks are about the only part of a soccer game I enjoy...because I know the game is finally about over. Want to make the game more watchable to US fans? Compress the field by about 30% (keep the ratios the same; just shorten the field), and maybe make the nets larger. Encourage offense instead of rewarding defense. No one likes to see two hours of hard-fought action end in a 1-1 (or worse nil-nil) tie.
Hi Bill, after some years reading, I’m leaving my first comment. Oh, like your newsletter. So, I hate the penalty kicks and would like an alternative. My idea: after regulation time is done, game resumes, but after 5 min of play, both sides lose a player. Who is removed from each side could be the coaches’ and/or players who decide the names and orders of who is removed and when. Or the removed players to be removed could be selected using some mutually accepted random number generated protocol. Every 5 min, two more players are pulled. Keep the players moving and no longer reduced to the mind-game pressure of the dreaded penalty shots. Just a two cents idea. Exciting Sat & Sun matches to look forward to. I think France is going for a revenge opportunity. Cheers!
I HATE PENALTY KICKS- it is a cheap, cruel lottery plus it ruins a great match that I refuse to watch. I leave the room and come back only after it is all done!
Love the baby Yamal meeting Messi story (vice-versa), thank you for reminding me. I watched it on CBS 60 Minutes in 2007. It is mind-blowing that history is being made this Sunday between the two icons on the world's biggest stage!
Here is how you improve the penalty kick situation and the game of soccer in general. Two rule changes:
1) Have offsides call favor the offense rather than the defense, meaning if any part of offensive player is onside, then play on. (current rule is if any part of offensive player is offside, even just a fingertip or toe, play is stopped)
2) The ball is not out of bounds unless it actually lands out of bounds. (seems subtle, but there were so many times in this years World Cup where the where passes that wrapped around the outside of the goal to a player on other side which really was amazing but just slightly out of bounds while in air, so it get called. I say let that pass count! Also could start seeing some interesting play on even from just the sidelines.
Those above two rule changes, obviously especially the first one, would add so much more offense to the game that you would not need any other changes to penalty kicks or otherwise. The ties and 1-nil scores would be greatly diminished and you would have way more games like the 5-3 England over France 3rd place game.
Note, I have brought this up to other soccer/european football lovers and unknown to me, I found out #1 has been brought up and officially proposed before. It apparently does have a lot of supporters, including a former Arsenal manager who had made it an official proposal (that was of course voted down by FIFA at the time). But maybe it is time to bring it up again? What do you think Bill? You should take the clout you have with this subscriber list and got on the horn with FIFA. :-) Take care!

This could potentially be a game that never ends off no one scores.
What are you doing? This is the internet! Respecful disagreement isn’t allowed!

Welp, I know you'll write about soccer/football up until or through Monday, so I'll just look forward to Tuesday. Maybe. <wink>

I thought I was the only one who reacted this way! Thanks.

I absolutely love your alternate tie suggestion. There is no tie after 30 minutes and penalties. 👍🏼😀
