Decorate my mansion

Two stories I found and read in quick succession, which explain a lot about something right about now—

— and that I hope can lead us into an interesting Friday comment thread.

I could show you 20 other stories saying basically the same thing: Wealthy (older) people are house-rich; younger (less wealthy) people can’t find or afford a starter house.

So, let’s go right to it. Does that make sense to you, when you think of your situation and the people you know? Let’s start a discussion.

  • Where do you live? Are you happy with where you live?

  • How old were you when you first owned real estate? (Or, the obvious follow-up questions: If you haven’t owned real estate, is that by choice or for another reason? And if you don’t mind, how old are you?)

  • Is your gut sense that it’s true that economic opportunities just aren’t as good for younger people today as they were for previous generations?

  • Or is it no different, in the main, than what Billy Joel was singing about in 1981? (Allentown lyrics: “Every child had a pretty good shot/To get at least as far as their old man got/But something happened on the way to that place…”)

As always for these—if you want to answer (semi-)anonymously, reply to this email with your comment, and I’ll add it without your name.
