My third grader brought home a page of cursive lowercase letter b’s yesterday that she was very proud of, which she had completed in class during their cursive practice portion of the day. So, at least in our school, cursive is still being taught. She also took a free cursive course at our local library last summer, just because she thinks the style is beautiful. Just throwing that out there!
“Some people just don’t have any luck”. That’s how I used to see my life. “Everything that could go wrong did go wrong”. But I was “should-ing” on myself. I was trying to make something out of what just wasn’t working. I hit a brick wall. But luckily, I found the brick wall was me. There’s a cure for that. Life isn’t a Disney movie and there is ebb and flow, yin and Yang and never forget humor. M*A*S*H* came on the scene 50 years ago and showed how humor could get you through the worst of times. “Anatomy of Illness” was written by Norman Cousins who cured an incurable nerve condition by watching the Marx Brothers movies. Add a few 12 step meetings, a therapist and good friends and life turned around. We can make a lot of mistakes, some will be with us forever, but even in prison there was the Birdman of Alcatraz and the meditation programs that turned many inmates around to be negotiators instead. As they said in the M*A*S*H* theme song-“Suicide is Dangerous” unless you have a bunch of crazy geniuses around you that can make you laugh and bring you back to life.
Love the Victoria’s Secret song. The older I get I realize how smart my mother was. She told her three daughters this so many years ago. Her admonitions extended to all the extreme trends and changes in the “fashion” of the day that were simply to line the “old men’s”pockets.I constantly hear so many “findings” on nutrition, exercise, human relationships and life in general that she told us about. I’m lucky to be one of her three daughters.
It's not just Victoria's Secret. Look at the music videos being put out. The women are often scantily clad with stiletto heels and big make up. Their audience does not see the work the artists put on to look like that. Or understand that big butts are genetic. Not to mention the wonder of airbrushing photos. Makes me sad for today's teens.
Love the idea behind the song (not so much the music) that everyone, especially middle school girls, should be proud of their bodies and not to buy into the images put out from various media. Don't want to be a Donny-downer but the young girl in the wheel chair was able to kick her legs up and move them to the beat of the song, so I'm curious why is she in a wheelchair?
Great newsletter and one worth sharing with all my family and friends. Thanks for revealing the historic secret behind Victoria's secret and the videos. By the way, "general relativity" for babies? That's awesome!!
Great story, Bill. And fine reporting! The Victoria's Secret video is hilarious. Also, the General Relativity for Babies book was very informative for this scientifically oriented individual (me). How simple can some things get!
Loved the VS video. It was obvious to me years ago when I was MUCH younger that their products were not for me.
As for the Queen, we were flying into the UK as her death was announced and we’ve been here ever since. It will be an interesting period of time for the King and this wonderful, ancient country.
Thank you for playing Paul Harvey here and bringing us “The rest of the story….”
Jax is certainly very talented and quite entertaining…tears of joy for her and her “mob”…great hit
I knew of Wexler and his despicable retail practices back in the early eighties and am frankly surprised that he and his ilk have prospered and lasted so long
I feel compelled to share that 2 weeks ago I took my mom to an appointment at the James Cancer Center, as she is a two-time survivor of breast cancer. After her appointment with her doctor, we visited a boutique, located within the building, that is devoted to getting lovely and functional undergarments to women who have had mastectomies and reconstructive surgery, called Hope Boutique. The Wexners donated $100 million to this cancer center, which is located in central Ohio and is part of the extensive OSU medical community, also largely funded by the Wexners. So, thanks, Les!
Re: cursive's no longer being taught. A friend who has a high rank in the Army says he regularly has young (subordinate officers) come to him with written orders/notes that he's left on their desks, saying, "Sir, I can't read this." In fact, he has stunningly elegant handwriting, a legacy of his Catholic school upbringing, no doubt.
Yup, but schools are counting on computer format

Oops. “Suicide is Painless”, but it still works in this context.
The first thing I thought about when I heard of the Navy veteran being released was the Showtime series Homeland.
Probably just the pessimist in me.

What a sad story about the VS founder. Thanks for sharing it. (And Puerto Rico's disastrous hurricane is not a thing worth knowing today?)
Love the Victoria Secret article and video. I sent it to all my nieces…Thanks!!

Loved the song. SO much truth in it. Thanks for sharing.

Quite disappointing and disgusting
