When you eliminate petty dramas and recognize things are bigger than yourself, you have an opportunity to gain perspective. I can’t imagine what it might be like to actually see earth in its entirety from space.

Thanks, way to get off of the beaten path..

Once you are up there you can clearly see that the big party is down here!

I know the District of Columbia is not a state, however, it does have very romantic places to visit. 💕

Love the shout out to Frank White, author of The Overview Effect. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Frank and he is both a brilliant and kind man. The closest I can imagine the overview effect is seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time when I was 20 years old. Initially I could not comprehend the enormity of it. It took about 10 minutes before my mind adjusted and could accept what it was seeing and how small I was by comparison. It’s helpful to be humbled by awe.

Excuse my ignorance folks, but what’s the controversy over the word “woke”? Obviously I’ve missed something 🤔

You've only missed one of the largest skirmishes in the conservatives/liberals international culture war 😀. Too long to get into here but if you google "woke culture war" you'll find rabbit holes of varying depths down which you might go.

Thanks Kevin, I’ll definitely check it out.

Or save yourself some time and be happy about your ignorance. Not always a bad thing. Great name for a breakfast restaurant in my view.

Indeed. Rabbit holes can be quite deep and dangerous. Great breakfast restaurant name and logo!

It’s only a controversy for some people. In fact, it’s a term only used by some people, mostly on the far right side of the political spectrum. Seems it is the new version of “politically correct.”

It's used by anyone tired of giving up their civil liberties to a select minority of people who are outraged over everything...including Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman".

Bill:

I’m just a caveman, but I recognize great writing when I see it. Wow.

The way you crafted that article and built up to that last sentence was sheer gold. And that last sentence? On the nose.

You knocked it out of the park today Bill! Or maybe I should say off the planet.

• Four years after legalizing recreational marijuana, Canada will again display its progressive drug policy bona fides on Jan. 31, when a law to decriminalize the personal possession of hard drugs in British Columbia takes effect. In a 3-year test, possession of small amounts of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and other hard drugs will be allowed in Canada’s westernmost province. Drug trafficking will remain illegal.

It really is the slow eradication of a thinking, productive society.

It would really suck if so many people went into outer space they ruined that too.

I think you'll find that it's been done before. Successfully in Portugal, where they well funded associated health and mental health services as well as decriminalizing, and less successfully in Oregon where they haven't funded associated programs well.

Portugal saw a small immediate increase in usage (some experimentation, presumably) followed by a decrease in usage. That decrease remains to this day, apparently.

So I'm not sure what your "slow eradication of a thinking, productive society" refers to. Seems the thinking, productive societies are the ones which treat hard drug use as a health problem rather than a criminal one.

Enjoyed the food for thought today. I was impressed with how the experience affected the astronauts. I love the part about boundaries fading.
