I honestly can’t believe the results of that survey. We have casinos around us and there are widespread gambling addictions with much more spent under the influence of alcohol. Any AA meeting can attest to that. So were the participants phoned on their landlines (haha)? And who would take their booze with them while clothes shopping unless it was online? And if they spent more money gambling while drinking, do you honestly think they’d own up to it? Well, anyway, in my burg gambling would definitely win the prize.
This calls to mind we focus on the most tragic, headline grabbing outcomes of intoxication--drunk driving. We fail to factor in the myriads of ways alcohol use is involved in so many life altering situations that do not make the evening news.
Overspending,yes, AND
-unwanted sexual experiences
-pregnancies,
-rape,
-lost jobs,
-conflict in families,
-lower grades,
-loss of scholarships,
-dropping out of college (a sizeable chunk of students do so and admit alcohol as a major factor),
-broken bones (and loss of a place on the team),
- head injuries,
-interpersonal violence,
-gun use,
-child abuse and neglect,
-overall compromised physical health,
-crime,
-incarceration,
-homelessness.
To name a few.
I've always been embarassed that so many fundraising events make it a point to serve alcohol before the pledging or bidding begins. Even caring people might overspend in that setting and alcohol has fueled an inplanned decision.
THANK YOU for reminding us acohol impairs forward thinking (even a couple of beers or glasses of wine can move us to a decision we didn't intend to make. I will always wonder if Will Smith had been a bit under the inflluence when he slapped Chris Rock?)
Driving cars can have the same results as the list above. Existing mental health issues as well. Poverty, stupidity, just plain meanness - and many other things.
I believe the key is how you might abuse anything, and I mean anything.
When preparing a nice meal I generally consume 2.5 five ounce glasses of red wine over the course of two or so hours. I also know my body (based on medical fact) metabolizes a 14% ABV single glass of wine an hour. I am perfectly fine and have also experimented with breathalyzers out of curiosity.
The list of things that influence how inebriated one might become are at least as lengthy as the list you provided above.
I suspect Will Smith was under the influence of his ego and his wife when he made his poor decision.
Thanks for reading the post and your comment, Darrell. "The list of things that influence how inebriated one might become are at least as lengthy as the list you provided above." The influence of alcohol on our brains is physiological response that we can measure, hence Blood Alcohol Level. Even if we don't "feel" the effects of or "act drunk" our reaction time, physical capabilities and reasoning abilities are compromised. You are so very right: mental health issues, poverty, stupidity, and just plain meanness can contribute to poor outcomes. Alas, we lack accurate strategies to measure the last two, and the collective and political will to address the first two. Yes, people can consume alcohol safely and with great enjoyment, such as you do, and that is a positive addition to your life. I would not encourage anyone to deprive you of that. My concerns focus in my work focuses on youth consumption, and adults who buy, supply, fail to lock up, and create a culture where intoxication is tolerated, winked at and even encouraged. Thank you again, Darrell, for taking time to read and post. I wish you a great weekend and perhaps a nice meal with some fine red wine!
Well - I confess that I ordered (2) Tesla’s after a round of drinks while sitting on my couch. I ordered the 1st one and wasn’t patient enough to wait 5 mins for the confirming email so I ordered again thinking the 1st order didn’t go through. 10 mins later I received confirmation of both. Lucky for me, this was back when only a $100 deposit was required. So my evening cost me the price of a couple of drinks and an extra $100…
So, new thing with the time of our comments or am I really not that observant and it’s been there all along? Or maybe I’ve been drinking previously?!?!
Re a 6 month pause in further developing AI systems: I am still trying to wrap my head around
what GPT-4 means for the future: my writing, my trust and lack thereof of source material, my worldview...The leaders of industry are not beholden to any citizens. A more powerful position than any elected official. Speaks volumes that the chief executive at OpenAI and the CEOs of Alphabet and Microsoft did not sign the letter.
And on the no-fly list for people fined for or convicted of serious physical violence and abuse, perhaps alcohol is a contributing factor. Being banned from flying (for life?) is a worse consequence than purchases that you can return.
Watch 4 games at once? It hard enough to find one good game to watch. Postpone A/I development for 6 months? Another musk brain fart. What the heck is that going to do? Get rid of it all together.
I think you've missed part of the picture. Drunk donating. That's what you do on New Year's Eve when you realize that it's the end of the tax year. Your phone makes that really easy too. But no backsies!
The piece is refreshingly not sobering...actually, reading this provided a sorely needed dose of levity. Thanks: while it is for sure not a funny subject, it wasn't "bad" in the sense of most news, most daze.
Our local wine store showcases special deals in really great write ups about once a month. You read about the winery, the owners, the taste and terroir, and the “one time special price” on a case or half case. The emails appear in my inbox around 10:30 or so at night, after a couple of glasses of wine, during my “before sleep” email scroll. I suspect they sell a lot of cases (in addition to my purchase) because of this timing.
Earlier this week I purchased 2 sets of books in a genre I rarely read. Maybe the cute puppies on the covers was the draw but that doesn’t explain the books with kittens and cats on the covers. I actually deleted all of them. I still had to pay for them of course. I do believe the late hour & wine may have been a factor. Maybe I thought I was purchasing a puppy, but that doesn’t explain the cats.
Great piece. Interested to see more developments on the Jonathan Majors charges.

So, how many of those inebriated slobs purchased a subscription to an email newsletter? Further research is certainly warranted. 😀
Now you see my plan mwahahaha
THANK YOU!

With Ambien and alcohol, I am my own Secret Santa! (don't come at me, it's joke)
